Overview

The 2027 Volvo EX90 electric midsize luxury SUV is now in its third model year and is, for all practical purposes, the electric variant of the XC90, and sits on a version of the same SPA2 platform. Plus and Ultra trim levels are offered across the powertrain configurations.

Powertrain and battery combinations include a 92-kWh battery and single-motor RWD variant with 329 hp, while the Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance both have a 106-kWh battery and dual-motor AWD with either 449 or 670 hp, the latter capable of reaching 60 mph in four seconds flat. A maximum DC charging speed of 350 kW is possible, and range tops out at 310 miles. The cabin is comfortable and quiet, and all trims share a Google-based infotainment system with a 14.5-inch display.

What’s New for 2027

Last year, the EX90 received a new 800V electrical architecture and a newly available single-motor powertrain, so the 2027 EX90 is not expected to undergo any changes.

Exterior

The EX90’s shape is cleaner and sleeker than that of the XC90, with a smoothed-off nose and closed-off grille panel, flush door handles, and the familiar Thor’s Hammer LED DRLs and headlights. The Plus runs on 20-inch wheels and the Ultra on 21s, but the Ultra can be upgraded to 22s at extra cost. The Ultra comes with soft-close doors and air suspension.

Interior

The sustainable interior is leather-free in the Plus, but the upholstery options look suitably premium and include the extensive use of recycled materials, such as the wool-blend upholstery. Three-row seating is standard, with space for six with the 2nd-row captain’s chairs or seven with the 3-seater bench. The second row offers 36.5 inches of legroom and a plentiful 41.6 inches of headroom. In the third row, space is limited for adults, with 31.9 inches of legroom and 35.8 inches of headroom.

A panoramic roof is standard, and it’s electrochromatically dimmable on the Ultra. Other standard features include birch decor, Nordico upholstery, heated power front seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, front-collision mitigation, lane-keep assist, intersection braking, and a Google-based infotainment system with a 14.5-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, and a 14-speaker Bose audio system. The Ultra gets Nappa leather, ventilated and massaging front seats with power side bolsters, and Light Ash decor.

Price Range and Best Value Trim

The 2027 Volvo EX90’s price is not expected to change much.

ModelPrice
Plus Single Motor~$77,600
Plus Twin Motor~$81,000
Plus Twin Motor Performance~$86,000
Ultra Twin Motor~$85,000
Ultra Twin Motor Performance~$90,000

The Ultra Twin Motor strikes us as a great package for around $85K. It comes with the 449-hp dual-motor AWD powertrain and the Ultra spec level, which includes Nappa leather, an electrochromatic panoramic roof, and ventilated and massaging front seats.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Quiet and refined on the move
  • From 329-hp RWD to 670-hp AWD on the powertrain menu
  • 800-volt charging architecture and 350-kW charging
  • Premium interior and practical 3-row layout

Cons:

  • Touchscreen-reliant controls
  • Third row is not meant for full-size adults
  • Top trims get expensive quickly

Verdict

The Volvo EX90 is everything we came to love about the XC90, but in a sleeker package with silent but potent electric power and a range of over 300 miles. The base powertrain affords you entry to the EX90 for less than $80K, but it looks every bit the luxury SUV with its clean Scandinavian styling and expensively trimmed cabin. It’s best to reach for the mid-range 449-hp powertrain if the budget allows, as it gives you AWD and strong performance.
