Overview

The 2027 Hyundai Ioniq 9 midsize 3-row electric SUV is Hyundai’s flagship EV and comes with impressive numbers: a 110.3-kWh battery that provides a range of 311 to 335 miles, an 800V electrical architecture with a maximum DC charging speed of 350 kW, seating for up to seven, and a starting price of under $60,000. The interior is surprisingly premium for a mainstream nameplate, too. The base single-motor RWD powertrain produces 215 hp, but there are also dual-motor 303- and 422-hp options.

What’s New for 2027

The 2027 Ioniq 9 gets a new flagship trim applied to the existing Calligraphy trim, and it’s called the Calligraphy Black Ink (all the images in this review). It’s decked out in Abyss Black Pearl paint and gets black 21-inch Turbine Design wheels, black-chrome exterior trim, and gloss-black roof rails, badges, and window moldings. The interior is all-black as well. The Black Ink comes only with the top-of-the-line dual-motor AWD powertrain with 422 hp.

Exterior

Hyundai calls the Ioniq 9’s imposing styling its Parametric Pixel design language, and this is expressed in the upright proportions and Pixelated LED headlights. The shape is boxy, and the lines are straight, with a gently rising waistline and a gently sloping roofline. Wheel sizes start at 19 inches, growing to 20 and 21 inches as you progress up the trim walk. Vertically arranged LED taillights cascade down the rear pillars.

The new Calligraphy-based Black Ink trim is totally blacked out on the outside, including its trim-specific Turbine Design 21-inch wheels. The SUV is just under 200 inches long, making it one of the larger players in the midsize segment.

Interior

The cabin is modern and surprisingly luxurious for a mainstream brand, with high-quality finishes and materials in evidence. The S establishes the baseline with cloth upholstery, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, automatic emergency braking, Highway Driving Assist 2, adaptive cruise control, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless smartphone integration, a wireless charging pad, Wi-Fi, seven USB ports scattered about all three rows, and 8-speaker audio.

Higher trims gain features such as leatherette upholstery, a power passenger seat, ventilated front seats, an Ergo Motion driver’s seat, heated and heated second-row seats, a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, and Bose premium audio. The Calligraphy trims get a microfiber headliner, alloy pedals, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, and more.

There is space for seven in a 2-3-2 configuration, but the Limited and up have dual second-row captain’s chairs, reducing seating capacity to six.

Headroom39.5 – 41.5 inches39.4 – 41.0 inches39.7 – 39.8 inches
Legroom41.4 inches42.8 inches31.0 inches

The third row is tight on legroom and is only really suitable for children, though it offers plenty of headroom. Cargo space is a decent 21.9 cu-ft, even behind the third row. With the third row folded, this increases to 46.7 cu-ft, and with the second row also folded, a total of 86.9 cu-ft is available.

Verdict

The Ioniq 9 is a massively accomplished midsize 3-row electric SUV, and it’s hard to believe it’s Hyundai’s first stab at the segment. It offers excellent refinement, a quiet, comfortable ride, an unexpected upscale interior, and space for up to seven, though the third row is more suited to children. Its 800V electrical architecture brings 350-kW DC charging capability, and the large 110-kWh battery ensures that all trims comfortably exceed 300 miles. What’s more, the NACS port allows you to charge at Tesla Superchargers. The best trim in an excellent lineup is the SEL, which offers you the core Ioniq 9 experience with all the necessary features that the base trims lack.
