The 2026 Volvo XC40 in a Nutshell
The XC60 may be Volvo’s cash cow these days, but the smaller XC40 is doing its part to attract more people into the Swedish automaker’s showrooms. That said, we find it a little sad that Volvo only sells just one wagon in the US (V60 Cross Country), but it could be considered a blessing as other markets can’t even get that.
Still, we won’t dismiss the XC40. Introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year, the subcompact Volvo has raked in awards over the years. It was the European Car of the Year in 2018, and the Car of the Year Japan for 2018-2019.
There are four trims available for the XC40, along with two powertrain and drivetrain options. Prices range from $39,990 to $51,900.

2026 Volvo XC40 Highlights
The four trims for the XC40 are the Core, Plus, Ultra, and Black Edition. All get advanced driving assists as standard, along with wireless phone integration and Google Assistant. The Plus adds a panoramic sunroof, interior ambient lighting, and a built-in air purifier.
Opt for the Ultra, which includes a Harman/Kardon sound system and Pilot Assist, providing a degree of semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The Black Edition is pretty self-explanatory and gets all the kit from the Ultra Trim.
For engines, both are equipped with mild-hybrid tech. In the B4, it’s a 2.0-liter turbo with 194 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, serving as the base engine for the Core and Plus. Meanwhile, the B5 uses the same block but with power bumped to 247 hp and 258 lb-ft. The B5 is standard in the Ultra and Black Edition trims, along with all-wheel drive, and optional in the Core and Plus.

Final Thoughts
It’s a bit of an underrated gem, the XC40. For those shopping in the subcompact luxury crossover space, customers gravitate towards something German and rarely consider anything else. The thing is, the XC40 offers more bang for your buck thanks to a comprehensive equipment list, and the cabin is a welcome break from the ‘tablet stuck on a dashboard’ look we’re seeing in more cars these days. Before you go get that BMW X1 or Audi Q3, you need to take the XC40 out for a spin first, before you head to the Germans.
