The 2026 BMW X5 in a Nutshell

It’s not the first luxury crossover, but it’s one of the segment’s most definitive models. The BMW X5 continues to be a strong and hugely popular model for the Bavarians, and with crossover-hungry customers everywhere, we don’t see this one losing steam any time soon. The X5 is the second-best-selling BMW model in the U.S., just a few hundred behind the X3 last year.

Now in its fourth generation, the current X5 was revealed in mid-2018 for the 2019 model year and was given a facelift for 2024. The crossover not only received a few styling tweaks in its update but also gained a new interior, plus powertrain and software enhancements. The 2026 model brings faster charging speeds to the plug-in hybrid.

2026 BMW X5 Highlights

Excluding the X5 M Competition, the lineup consists of four trim levels, priced from $68,300 to $93,600. The sDrive40i is the lone rear-wheel-drive option, while the xDrive40i, xDrive50e, and M60i come standard with all-wheel drive. Active Driving Assist is included in all X5s, as well as Active Protection, front seat heaters, panoramic sunroof, and power-adjustable steering column.

X5s come with a variety of option packages. The Premium Package includes a head-up display, remote engine start, and a Harman/Kardon sound system. The Executive Package adds the Panoramic Sky LED sunroof, glass controls, and soft-close doors. Other options include the M Sport package and additional driver-assist features.

The sDrive40i and xDrive40i models are powered by the familiar 3.0-liter inline-six turbo, which makes 375 hp. Above that, the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid has a combined output of 483 hp. V8 power is exclusive to the M60i, with its 4.4-liter turbo producing 523 hp.

Final Thoughts

Is the X5 the top choice in the midsize luxury crossover market? Given its talents, it’s tempting to say yes. Handling and driving dynamics are what one expects from a BMW, but it still delivers heaps of comfort, space, and practicality. Regardless of what trim is chosen, the X5 is undeniably polished and hard to fault. The current model is due to be replaced soon, but this one is still well worth considering.
