A very rare offering from Porsche.

The legendary Porsche 911 has been produced continuously since 1964, now in its eighth generation. Today’s feature hails from the second generation, also known as the G-Series, which ran from 1974 to 1989. The sporty, turbocharged version of the 911 in that era was called the 930, and while these aren’t exactly rare, they are not common either. However, what makes this truly a rare find is the M505 ‘slant nose’ front end, styled after Porsche’s 934 and 935 race cars.

According to the official Porsche site, only 686 of these special M505s were turned out by the factory, of which only 204 were second generations, and an unknown, but fractional number were in a ‘Cabriolet’, aka convertible style. We don’t know how many of this exact configuration were built, let alone are left in the wild, but we do know the number is small, and finding one at auction is unusual to say the least. Let’s dig into what makes this particular 911 M505 so special.

Ready for the Grand Prix

The paint coating this rare specimen is Grand Prix White, which stands out even brighter and purer than the studio where the photos were taken. There’s plenty of black accent coloring as well, including a bar on the side of the body, the top part of the tea-tray style rear spoiler, a band along the bumper, and the framing of the pop-up headlights. The soft top and cover are also black.

The M505 ‘slant-nose’ bodywork is quite striking compared to the standard 911 930, dipping sharply down across the entire front plan, without any of the sweeping fender rising up on the sides. There is also a lower ground clearance in a nod to the racing heritage of this factory variant. The 16″ Fuchs alloy wheels, painted white, are shod in both Dunlop and Continental tires, all of which feature cross-drilled and ventilated disc brakes.

All dolled up with Lipstick Red

The outside of this 911 may be a respectable and distant white, but the inside is a much more intimate Lipstick Red on the two power-adjusted leather bucket seats, door panels, and center console, complemented by a slightly more orange-red carpeting. The quad-spoked steering wheel is also entirely red, with two parallel bars and a padded rectangular center, featuring an off-center yellow-and-red Porsche shield logo.

The black VDO instrumentation sports white markings and red needles, with a centrally mounted tachometer that redlines at 6,700 rpm, a speedometer that maxes at 170 mph, as well as smaller, secondary gauges for oil pressure and temperature, fuel level, and turbocharger pressure. There is also a Kenwood radio, an analog clock face, as well as heating and air conditioning.

A boosted driving experience

The engine that powers this highly collectible 911 is a turbocharged 3.3L (201ci) flat-six ‘boxer’ style engine, capable of putting out 282 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. All of that power is pushed to the rear wheels by way of a four-speed manual transaxle, combining the transmission, rear axle, and limited-slip differential into one piece, made practical by the 911’s rear-engine layout. All four wheels use disc brakes, and the odometer reads 39,000 miles, though the true mileage is unknown.

Final thoughts: Don’t miss your chance for this rare deal

The Porsche 911 is an iconic nameplate with timeless appeal. An ordinary second-generation model isn’t necessarily unusual or difficult to find, but a 930 that has paperwork proving a factory M505 front styling kit is no ordinary 911. We’re not saying you’ll never see another on auction ever again, but they are quite rare. If you have any interest at all in picking up a highly collectible Porsche, then we encourage you to place your bids before this treasure is in your rear-view mirror.
