Unmodified and dignified classic

It is not often that such a perfectly preserved, unadulterated example of a classic comes along. This Fiat 124 Spider is virtually unchanged from when it rolled off the factory line, with no vinyl wrapping or restructuring body work, no aftermarket exhausts, no engine upgrades, not even some of the quality of life little luxuries we are so used to today, like updated air conditioning or power windows. This particular 1975 Fiat 124 Spider is available on Exotic Car Trader, and you can check out the listing by clicking here.

Like the day it was made

You would be forgiven for assuming a body this well preserved must have had major repairs at some point in the last few decades. While there are a few nicks here or there if you really inspect with a keen eye, even at a small distance, these imperfections become almost invisible, and entirely missable.

The factory Arctic Blue paint still pops and shines with the best, and the Italian curves are a perfect canvas. The single rearview mirror mounted on the driver’s side door is charming, while the chrome bumpers, handles, and trim play well with the hue of this 124 Spider, helping draw the eye to all the right places.

Passing the test of time

This Fiat 124 Spider is simple, straightforward, and, in some ways, bare-bones even for its era. An all-black leather interior is basic but well-built and well-maintained, with adjustable driver and passenger seats and a bench in the back that, frankly, looks better left empty or as a luggage rack than as seating for people.

The wood dash paneling is accented with black and silver trim and houses a speedometer and tachometer, as well as four additional gauges, all on the driver’s side. The gear shifter and steering wheel show their age, as does the driver’s seat cover, but they are still perfectly serviceable for a car that’s 50 years old.

Sipping petrol like fine wine

Fiat in the 1960s and 70s had a real winner with the twin-cam inline-four-cylinder Lampredi engine. This particular Fiat 124 Spider has the 1.8L engine, though later Fiats also came in 2.0L variants. Known for being efficient without sacrificing power at full throttle, the I4 Lampredi is free-revving, delivering power to the 5-speed manual transmission in a way that is both satisfying and substantial.

Final thoughts

There are certainly comfier classics available on the market; restomods and restorations with quality of life add-ons, flashy performance and cosmetic enhancements, and upgrades reflecting that technology has progressed from the original manufacture date.

However, there is something raw and primal, even admirable, about a car that rejects these all-too-familiar concessions and defiantly clings to its roots. Like an all-natural athlete on the course surrounded by steroid-infused gym bros, sometimes it’s the minor imperfections that ground and impress all the more than even the most perfectly toned bodies, sculpted curves, and perfectly calibrated power under the hood.

With enough money and time, almost any classic car can be restored to gorgeous condition, but it is rare to find one like this 1975 Fiat 124 Spider that looks so sharp without all the ‘cosmetic surgery’.
