The original pony car

Nothing quite says American Muscle like the pony car, a traditionally two-door, four-seater with a long hood and a short deck/trunk in back. And nothing says pony car like the Ford Mustang. In fact, the term is said to originate from the Mustang, a nod to the equine name and iconography of one of Ford’s best classics.

Released in 1964, the first generation ran all the way until 1973, almost a decade later. In 1974, Ford scaled down the Mustang, marking the start of the second generation, and with no real parts interchangeability with the first run. This 1970 Ford Mustang on Exotic Car Trader is a stunning red convertible, au naturale with few to no updates, and only 36,000 miles.

Mustang? More like must-dang

Everything about this 1970 example of Ford’s beloved Mustang is a joy to behold and brings to mind simpler times. That is not to say there is anything outdated or quaint about its look, quite the contrary; the Mustang is a timeless shrine to classic American motoring.

The wide and tall grille consumes the front end of this wild beast, giving a no-nonsense intensity to her appearance. The headlights are completely engulfed by the trim around the grille, balanced by the central prancing silver horse ornament. The front bumper has two little under-slung supports that jut out like fangs, while the rear bumper is solid and chunky, curved up at the ends to cradle the six rear lights in two lines of three.

A weighty Mustang badge lies below the trunk release lock, like the embossed center of an ancient shield, the silver horse inside it resting like the needle in a compass, pointing ever towards freedom. Underneath, period-correct wheels in pristine condition complete the classic look.

A time capsule to the 1970s

The interior of this 1970 Mustang is virtually unchanged from when it rolled off the factory line—all black seat leather, paneling, and dash. The only notable change is an aftermarket radio, but it is very subdued and blends well with the overall original styling. Even the air conditioning is vintage and original. For being over 50 years old, it is in exceptional condition.

Original power, enhanced steering

This particular example seems to have been one of the lighter, leaner offerings. With a still-original 302Ci V8 engine, it comes with a three-speed automatic transmission. The owner has upgraded this model with power steering, a feature it did not originally have, but one we can all agree is a huge quality-of-life improvement on the modern road.

Final thoughts: A classic with a great body and a beautiful soul

It’s always refreshing to find a car that has kept its original vision and tapestry of elegance alive through the years. There’s nothing at all wrong with restomods and fully overhauled favorites brought up to date with modern-day standards, but I am sure you will agree, there’s something starkly beautiful about a car that has managed to cruise through the years on its own merits. It’s earned a right to continue on the road of life while standing squarely and unapologetically on its own four (un-upgraded) wheels. Anyone can be beautiful with enough body work, paint, and modern additions, but that natural look has a particular kind of stand-out attraction of its own.
