2016 Nissan Titan XD with gas-fueled V8 starts at $36,485

The 2017 Titan half-ton pickup Crew Cab arrives in late summer.

Nissan launched the 2016 Titan XD with a major focus on its diesel-fueled Cummins 5.0-liter V8, but this spring customers can also get the truck's 5.6-liter Endurance V8 for a starting price of $36,485 (including $1,195 destination), which is a $5,000 savings over the current powertrain. The gasoline-drinking engine makes 390 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, versus 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque for the Cummins. We get to see how it looks in the truck at the New York Auto Show.

The 5.6-liter V8 is exclusively available with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The gearbox is capable of downshift rev-matching, which seems more appropriate for a sports car rather than pickup.

Like the diesel-fueled Titan XD, models with the Endurance V8 are available in five trim levels and two- or four-wheel drive. All prices below include destination.
  • S Crew Cab 4x2 – $36,485
  • S Crew Cab 4x4 – $39,485
  • SV Crew Cab 4x2 – $40,255
  • SV Crew Cab 4x4 – $43,205
  • Pro-4X Crew Cab 4x4 – $47,165
  • SL Crew Cab 4x2 – $48,225
  • SL Crew Cab 4x4 – $51,225
  • Platinum Reserve Crew Cab 4x2 – $53,665
  • Platinum Reserve Crew Cab 4x4 – $56,715
Those prices are in line with the competition. A Ford F-250 SuperCrew would cost between $37,175 for the XL and 58,235 for the Platinum. In similar spec, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD costs between $37,935 for the WT and $57,935 for the High Country. Finally, the Ram 2500 Crew Cab costs $36,745 for the Tradesman to $58,775 for the Laramie Power Wagon.

After debuting it in Chicago, Nissan will also bring the Titan half-ton pickup (below) to the New York Auto Show but won't release pricing yet. The truck will go on sale in the late summer as a Crew Cab. Single and King Cab variants will arrive later in the model year. Like the Titan XD, it'll be available in five trim levels. Customers will also be able to choose among 5.5-, 6.5-, and 8-foot beds.

The Titan will also be available with the 5.6-liter V8 and seven-speed automatic. There will also be V6, but Nissan won't discuss anything about it yet.

The Titan and its XD big brother look similar but don't share any chassis components. The Titan Crew Cab is 14.7 inches shorter overall than its sibling, but cab sizes are identical. The standard truck's wheelbase is about a foot shorter.

"The TITAN XD stakes out a unique position in the full-size truck segment between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty entries. The bold new design combines the capabilities of a heavy-duty hauler with the drivability and affordability of a light-duty pickup," said Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc. "Now, with the addition of the powerful Endurance V8 gasoline engine, TITAN XD buyers can experience the 'Every DutyTM' TITAN XD two ways."

The new V8-powered TITAN XD also offers a range of popular equipment packages, allowing buyers to fine-tune the exact features they desire for work or family use.

"With TITAN XD's high-value equipment packages, owners can customize their trucks straight from the factory. For example, a TITAN XD Crew Cab 4x4 PRO-4X Endurance V8 model with the Comfort & Convenience and Luxury Packages has an MSRP of $51,890 – a tremendous truck for the money," added Diaz.

About the TITAN XD Endurance V8

Assembled in Decherd, Tenn., the new 5.6-liter Endurance V8 engine features four-valves per cylinder, Variable Valve Event & Lift and Direct Injection, and is rated at 390 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm and 401 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

While it shares its displacement with the previous-generation V8 installed in Titan, that is where the similarities end. The new engine features 390 horsepower (up from 317) and 401 lb-ft of torque (up from 385), along with Nissan's advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) technology, which combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake and exhaust sides to provide high performance and crisp response. Throttle response is enhanced by directly controlling the intake valve, rather than using the traditional method of controlling intake with a throttle valve, and valve timing and opening with non-variable camshafts.

The new engine also features Direct Injection Gas (DIGTM) technology, which provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance (versus a non-direct-injection system) by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering precise injection control. An 11.2:1 compression ratio is provided by a new piston design, aiding overall engine efficiency and performance (previous Titan: 9.8:1) and a Multi Control Valve (MCV) assists in managing the engine's thermal efficiency better than a traditional thermostat.

About TITAN XD

The all-new 2016 Nissan TITAN XD full-size pickup was named "Truck of Texas" by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in their annual 2015 Texas Truck Rodeo, which puts the industry's best trucks, SUVs and CUVs through a grueling two-day evaluation at the historic Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch, Texas. In addition to the competition's top award, Truck of Texas, the new TITAN XD won three other honors – Luxury Pickup Truck of Texas, Off-Road Pickup Truck of Texas and Best Powertrain for its available Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine.

The TITAN XD's long list of innovative available technologies includes an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation – including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights. Assisting trailer hook-ups is a RearView Monitor with Trailer Guides. TITAN XD also offers an available Around View® Monitor (AVM), which provides a unique "bird's eye" view of the surrounding area to help with parking and pulling in and out of tight spaces. The system includes Moving Object Detection (MOD). Two trailer hitches are available, including an integrated gooseneck hitch engineered into the frame and easily accessible in the bed.

The TITAN XD is offered in five grade levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum Reserve and the sporty PRO-4X grade with standard off-road features such as 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with all-terrain off-road tires, Bilstein off-road shock absorbers, electronic locking rear differential and skid plates. The TITAN XD Platinum Reserve grade features premium leather-appointed heated seating, dark chrome exterior trim, two-tone paint treatment, leather-wrapped steering wheel with wood insert, 20-inch dark chrome aluminum-alloy wheels and much more.

Following the launch of the 2016 TITAN XD Crew Cab, the new TITAN will be offered in three cab configurations, two frame sizes, three powertrain offerings and five grade levels. More information on the full lineup will be available at a later date.

Nissan shows all-new 2017 TITAN pickup at 2016 New York International Auto Show

-Half-ton truck fills out TITAN lineup; on-sale summer 2016-

NEW YORK (March 24, 2016) – Today at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, Nissan officially unveiled the standard bearer of its family of TITAN pickups – the 2017 TITAN Crew Cab, powered by Nissan's 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 gasoline engine.
With the all-new flagship XD model of Nissan's reimagined TITAN family of pickups already in dealer lots, this volume model, half-ton TITAN will go on sale in the late summer of 2016. TITAN will initially launch as a Crew Cab model with Single and King Cab variants planned for later in the model year.

"TITAN shares its aggressive style with the TITAN XD, but the two vehicles are completely different underneath the skin," said Fred Diaz, Division Vice President and General Manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc. "TITAN will compete in the heart of the full-size pickup segment – the half-ton – while the TITAN XD provides a unique solution for customers by bridging the cost and capability gap between traditional half-ton and full heavy-duty pickups. Between TITAN and TITAN XD, we will cover about 85 percent of the full-size truck market."

TITAN is built on a separate chassis from TITAN XD, and is approximately 228.1 inches long (14.7 inches less than XD) and 79.5 inches wide (same as XD), with the cab size shared between the two vehicles.

"We've said before that even the lug nuts are different from TITAN to TITAN XD," added Diaz. "What's important is that these two trucks are serving a completely different type of customer. As the head of Nissan's light commercial vehicle program in the U.S, I'm thrilled to be getting this truck into the lineup as an option for fleets as well as for the personal use buyer."

TITAN will be available in 4x2 or 4x4 drive configurations and three bed lengths – 5.5, 6.5 and 8 feet. Similar to TITAN XD, TITAN will be available in five trim levels – S, SV, PRO-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve.

The TITAN will be powered by Nissan's 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 gasoline engine, producing 390 horsepower. This engine, which will also be featured in the TITAN XD V8 Gas and the all-new 2017 Armada, will be mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. A V6 gasoline engine will also be available (details to be announced at a later date).

The Nissan TITAN will be assembled in Canton, Mississippi with the 5.6-liter V8 gasoline assembled in Decherd, Tennessee. The truck goes on sale in summer 2016, and pricing will be available closer to its on-sale date.
