Volkswagen may have come a long way since the original Beetle to produce hatchbacks, coupes, convertibles, sedans, wagons and crossovers... but pickups? As we found out in England recently, the Amarok is a notable exception, but it's not the only one. Head down to South America and you can also pick up the Saveiro.
Based on the Brazilian-made Gol hatchback, the Saveiro is a neo-Camino-esque coupe with a pickup bed – similar in form to the Fiat Strada that's also made in Brazil for the South American market. Like the Corvette, the Saveiro (Portuguese for "sloop") takes its name from a nimble sailing warship. It's been on the market in its current iteration since 2009, but Volkswagen do Brasil has recently rolled out an updated version.
As you can see, the facelifted Saveiro adopts a front end more in keeping with VW's current design language, but that's not the end of the updates. For the first time VW is also offering the Saveiro in a Double Cab configuration with an extra row of seats for three more passengers.
In addition to the standard, extended or new double cab body styles, buyers can also choose between Startline, Trendline, Highline or Cross trim levels, the latter adopting an off-road treatment to bring that much closer to the Amarok. A new 1.6-liter flex-fuel four mated to a five-speed manual gearbox offers up to 120 horsepower (in the Saveiro Cross) or 104 hp (in the less rugged models) and can run on gasoline, ethanol or both.

A picape compacta da Volkswagen ganha uma configuração inédita e versátil. A Saveiro Cabine Dupla chega em setembro às mais de 630 concessionárias da marca no Brasil como o veículo com mais tecnologia em seu segmento. Com design moderno, o modelo mantém o compromisso de oferecer, ao mesmo tempo, excelente espaço na cabine com capacidade para acomodar cinco adultos confortavelmente e ampla área útil da caçamba.
"A Saveiro Cabina Dupla é o veículo com mais inovação em seu segmento. Com esse modelo, a Volkswagen estabelece um novo patamar de segurança, desempenho, conforto e tecnologia em sua categoria", afirma o presidente da Volkswagen do Brasil, Thomas Schmall.
Disponível em três versões de acabamento e com duas opções de motores, o modelo amplia a sua área de atuação da Volkswagen no mercado de picapes compactas. "A Saveiro Cabine Dupla vem para incluir a Volkswagen em um novo segmento, formado por clientes de perfil diferenciado, que além de uma picape robusta procuram por um veículo para a família, com ótima dirigibilidade", afirma o gerente-executivo de Marketing de Comerciais Leves da Volkswagen do Brasil, Marcelo Olival.
Fabricada em São Bernardo do Campo (SP), a linha passa a contar com sete configurações, entre cabine simples, cabine estendida e cabine dupla, com motorização 1.6l MSI com potência de 104 cv e 120 cv (etanol). A Saveiro Cabine Dupla marca também a estreia da versão Highline, com visual e conteúdo diferenciados.
Dessa forma, seguindo a nomenclatura global da Volkswagen, a linha 2015 do utilitário será oferecida nas versões Startline (cabine simples), Trendline (cabines simples, estendida ou dupla), Highline (cabine dupla) e Cross (cabines estendida ou dupla). A versão aventureira está equipada com o novo motor 1.6l MSI, da família EA211, de até 120 cv. O restante da linha traz o consagrado motor 1.6 MSI, de até 104 cv. Modificar o perfil de uma picape compacta não é tarefa das mais simples. Especialmente quando o DNA global de estilo precisa ser preservado. Afinal, além de espaço para cinco ocupantes, a Saveiro Cabine Dupla tem a proposta de ser um veículo para o trabalho. Importante ressaltar que a linha Saveiro traz uma lateral exclusiva para cada configuração e todas seguem os mais altos índices de rigidez e frequência torcional, garantindo excelente dirigibilidade à picape Volkswagen.
"Da coluna B (ou seja, das portas) para trás, a carroceria é toda nova. E, ao aumentar o tamanho da cabine, houve um cuidado para manter as formas simétricas da Saveiro Cabine Dupla. Todas as linhas estão bem definidas, sem exageros, e o visual ficou esportivo", afirma o diretor de Design e Package da Volkswagen do Brasil, Luiz Alberto Veiga.
A Saveiro Cabine Dupla tem o teto elevado em relação às demais configurações da linha Saveiro. Por exemplo, a versão Trendline tem 1,54 metro de altura (4 cm a mais do que a Saveiro Trendline Cabine Estendida). seguem semelhantes às da versão de cabine estendida. São 4,49 metros de comprimento e 1,70 metro de largura (sem espelhos retrovisores). Já a Saveiro Cross Cabine Dupla é ainda maior: são 1,72 m de largura, 1,55 m de altura (4 cm a mais do que a Saveiro Cross Cabine Estendida) e 4,51 metros de comprimento.
O habitáculo da Saveiro Cabine Dupla conta com 1.339 mm de espaço para os ombros – 79 mm a mais do que o principal concorrente. O espaço interno para a cabeça também é um diferencial no segmento: a Saveiro Cabine Dupla tem 1.009 mm no banco dianteiro (23 mm a mais do que a Saveiro Cabine Estendida) e 945 mm de espaço para a cabeça no banco traseiro. O modelo Volkswagen oferece também mais espaço para as pernas entre o banco traseiro e dianteiro, superando o modelo concorrente.
Todas as versões da configuração Cabine Dupla têm distância entre-eixos de 2,75 metros e a caçamba capaz de acomodar 580 litros. Por falar em capacidades, a Saveiro Cabine Dupla tem o maior comprimento livre da categoria, oferecendo uma caçamba com comprimento de 1.106 mm no assoalho – medida 17% maior do que o principal concorrente.

Trendline – equipamentos valorizados pelos clientes
Na versão de entrada da Cabine Dupla, a Saveiro já traz recursos inéditos no segmento, especialmente quando o assunto é segurança. "De série, a picape Volkswagen conta com freios a disco nas quatro rodas com as funções ABS (antitravamento), EBD (distribuição eletrônica das forças de frenagem) e ESS (Emergency Stop Signal ou Sinal de Frenagem de Emergência), herdado dos veículos alemães mais sofisticados do mercado. Trata-se do melhor e mais modernos sistema de freios entre as picapes compactas no mercado brasileiro", afirma o gerente-executivo de Desenvolvimento do Veículo Completo, José Loureiro.
A Saveiro Cabine Dupla é dotada da nova arquitetura eletrônica da Volkswagen, uma das mais avançadas e complexas da categoria. Esse novo "esqueleto" eletrônico possibilitou a instalação de vários recursos inéditos entre as picapes compactas, como por exemplo o "Comfort Blinker", item que possibilita que o motorista, com um leve toque na alavanca de seta, indique a direção que pretende ir, sem necessariamente acionar a alavanca de seta completamente.
A Saveiro Trendline Cabine Dupla está equipada também de série com o sistema MSR (Motorschleppmomentregelung ou Controle do Efeito Freio Motor), que evita o escorregamento das rodas em pisos de baixo atrito devido ao efeito do freio-motor. A funcionalidade da Saveiro Cabine Dupla é realçada pelos vários locais de amarrações no veículo. O novo rack de teto oferece dois pontos de amarração e a caçamba conta com quatro ganchos fixos no assoalho e outras quatro alças deslizantes nas laterais superiores. Além de todos os recursos presentes na versão Trendline, a nova versão Highline da Saveiro Cabine Dupla recebe mais itens de conforto e de aparência: ar-condicionado, faróis duplos, faróis e lanterna de neblina, para-brisa degradê, acabamento preto na coluna B, alarme Keyless, volante multifuncional (com controles do sistema de som e de telefonia), rodas de aço de 15 polegadas (pneus 205/60 R15) com calotas exclusivas.
Outros equipamentos de série da versão Highline são o Park Pilot (sensores de estacionamento traseiros) com OPS (Optical Parking System) – este exclusividade na categoria. Esse recurso exibe na tela central do rádio a silhueta digital no formato da carroceria do veículo (visto de cima), exibindo uma barra que vai se aproximando do veículo à medida que a distância do obstáculo diminui. Com ajustes elétricos dos espelhos retrovisores também de série, a Saveiro Highline Cabine Dupla oferece a função "tilt down", presente em modelos como o Novo Golf, por exemplo. Esse recurso regula automaticamente o espelho retrovisor do lado do passageiro, apontando para o meio-fio toda vez que a marcha à ré é engatada, com o objetivo de auxiliar em manobras de estacionamento.
Ao desengatar a marcha à ré, o espelho retorna exatamente à posição em que estava ajustado previamente. O "tilt down" ainda permite que o motorista ajuste o quanto deseja que o espelho seja rebaixado ao ser acionado, melhorando o campo de visão do meio-fio.

O melhor sistema de freios entre as picapes – A Saveiro Cross conta com freios a disco nas quatro rodas com 280 mm de diâmetro na dianteira e 232 mm de diâmetro na traseira. Além de ser eficiente, esse sistema confere mais conforto ao motorista, uma vez que os novos freios demandam 60% menos força para realizar a mesma desaceleração. Isso sem falar que os freios da Saveiro Cabine Dupla têm melhor comportamento térmico (maior resistência ao fading, ou seja, perda de eficiência causada por aquecimento) do que os demais sistemas utilizados no mercado.

Outra solução inovadora adotada no novo motor 1.6l MSI é o duplo circuito de arrefecimento, que permite temperaturas diferentes para o bloco e para o cabeçote – o sistema utiliza duas válvulas termostáticas.

Na versão de entrada da Cabine Dupla, a Saveiro já traz recursos inéditos no segmento, especialmente quando o assunto é segurança. "De série, a picape Volkswagen conta com freios a disco nas quatro rodas com as funções ABS (antitravamento), EBD (distribuição eletrônica das forças de frenagem) e ESS (Emergency Stop Signal ou Sinal de Frenagem de Emergência), herdado dos veículos alemães mais sofisticados do mercado. Trata-se do melhor e mais modernos sistema de freios entre as picapes compactas no mercado brasileiro", afirma o gerente-executivo de Desenvolvimento do Veículo Completo, José Loureiro.
A Saveiro Cabine Dupla é dotada da nova arquitetura eletrônica da Volkswagen, uma das mais avançadas e complexas da categoria. Esse novo "esqueleto" eletrônico possibilitou a instalação de vários recursos inéditos entre as picapes compactas, como por exemplo o "Comfort Blinker", item que possibilita que o motorista, com um leve toque na alavanca de seta, indique a direção que pretende ir, sem necessariamente acionar a alavanca de seta completamente.
A Saveiro Trendline Cabine Dupla está equipada também de série com o sistema MSR (Motorschleppmomentregelung ou Controle do Efeito Freio Motor), que evita o escorregamento das rodas em pisos de baixo atrito devido ao efeito do freio-motor. Esse sistema atua quando o motorista libera rapidamente o pedal do acelerador e nas reduções de marcha, aumentando o torque através do controle do acelerador eletrônico.
Outro recurso de série desde a versão de entrada da Cabine Dupla é o GMA (Giermomentaufbauverzögerung ou Controle do Momento de Giro), que diminui a possibilidade de giro do veículo em piso com diferentes níveis de atrito. O sistema também proporciona diferentes forças de frenagem no momento da desaceleração até que a rotação das rodas seja equalizada.
Já o ESS funciona como um alerta para evitar colisões traseiras. Caso o motorista pressione o pedal de freio de forma acentuada, mantendo uma frenagem mais consistente, o sistema aciona as luzes de frenagem de forma intermitente. Após essa frenagem, com o veículo estático, as luzes de freio param de piscar e o ESS aciona as luzes de pisca-alerta, indicando que o veículo parou.
Outras novidades da Saveiro Cabine Dupla Trendline são os três apoios de cabeça no banco traseiro, cintos laterais traseiros com três pontos de fixação e recolhimento automático, desembaçador do vidro traseiro e a tomada de 12V adicional na parte de trás da cabine. Isso sem falar no sistema de abertura e fechamento da tampa traseira, que conta com o auxílio de molas a gás para facilitar o acesso à caçamba, aliviando o peso da tampa.

Além de todos os recursos presentes na versão Trendline, a nova versão Highline da Saveiro Cabine Dupla recebe mais itens de conforto e de aparência: ar-condicionado, faróis duplos, faróis e lanterna de neblina, para-brisa degradê, acabamento preto na coluna B, alarme Keyless, volante multifuncional (com controles do sistema de som e de telefonia), rodas de aço de 15 polegadas (pneus 205/60 R15) com calotas exclusivas.
Outros equipamentos de série da versão Highline são o Park Pilot (sensores de estacionamento traseiros) com OPS (Optical Parking System) – este exclusividade na categoria. O sistema de auxílio ao estacionamento funciona por meio de quatro sensores instalados no para-choque traseiro. Posicionados em locais estratégicos com o objetivo de ter o máximo de eficiência, esses sensores são pintados na cor da carroceria e contam com acabamento refinado, de forma que ficam bem discretos no veículo, praticamente imperceptíveis.
Com ajustes elétricos dos espelhos retrovisores também de série, a Saveiro Highline Cabine Dupla oferece a função "tilt down", presente em modelos como o Novo Golf, por exemplo. Esse recurso regula automaticamente o espelho retrovisor do lado do passageiro, apontando para o meio-fio toda vez que a marcha à ré é engatada, com o objetivo de auxiliar em manobras de estacionamento.
Ao desengatar a marcha à ré, o espelho retorna exatamente à posição em que estava ajustado previamente. O "tilt down" ainda permite que o motorista ajuste o quanto deseja que o espelho seja rebaixado ao ser acionado, melhorando o campo de visão do meio-fio.
O I-System com ECO Comfort também é equipamento standard na versão Highline. O melhor sistema de freios entre as picapes – A Saveiro Cross conta com freios a disco nas quatro rodas com 280 mm de diâmetro na dianteira e 232 mm de diâmetro na traseira. Além de ser eficiente, esse sistema confere mais conforto ao motorista, uma vez que os novos freios demandam 60% menos força para realizar a mesma desaceleração. Controle de estabilidade (ESC) – A Saveiro Cross Cabine Dupla incorpora de série o sistema de controle eletrônico de estabilidade (ESC). O sistema reconhece um estágio inicial de que uma situação de rodagem crítica está para acontecer. Compara os comandos do motorista com as reações do veículo a esse comando. Se necessário, o sistema reduz o torque do motor e freia uma ou várias rodas até atingir a condição de estabilidade.
ABS off-road – Outra inovação do utilitário são os freios ABS com função off-road. O sistema atua gerenciando o torque motriz e a frenagem individual da roda que destraciona, auxiliando na aderência dos pneus em qualquer condição de utilização.

Novo motor 1.6 MSI – eficiência e desempenho
A Saveiro Cross Cabine Dupla é equipada com o novo motor 1.6 MSI. Produzido em São Carlos, no interior de São Paulo, o novo propulsor conta com quatro cilindros e 16 válvulas (4 válvulas por cilindro) e utiliza o sistema de partida a frio que dispensa o tanque auxiliar para gasolina.
Com a tecnologia Total Flex, o novo motor é capaz de rodar com gasolina, etanol ou a mistura dos dois combustíveis em qualquer proporção. Sua potência máxima é de 120 cv (88 kW) a 5.750 rpm, quando abastecido com etanol (E100), e de 110 cv (81 kW) à mesma rotação, com gasolina (E22). O torque máximo é de 16,8 kgfm com etanol e 15,8 kgfm com gasolina, ambos a 4.000 rpm.
O novo motor 1.6l MSI possui bloco e cabeçote feitos de alumínio, o que colabora para reduzir o peso do conjunto. O cabeçote do novo motor 1.6l MSI possui comando de admissão variável e coletor de escape integrado, formando uma peça única, com refrigeração líquida.
Outra solução inovadora adotada no novo motor 1.6l MSI é o duplo circuito de arrefecimento, que permite temperaturas diferentes para o bloco e para o cabeçote – o sistema utiliza duas válvulas termostáticas.
