A New Hampshire man who was denied the vanity license plate COPSLIE because it was insulting to police is having his case taken to the state's Supreme Court. The man, who changed his name from David Montenegro to "human," argues that the plate doesn't violate any of the New Hampshire DMV's regulations.

"The Division of Motor Vehicles has a regulations which prohibits vanity license plates containing messages which the DMV believes a reasonable person would find offensive to good taste. That regulation does not meet constitutional standards," human said. Human applied for the plate in 2010, but was given an alternate choice, GR8GOVT, instead.

The DMV is represented by the state's Associate Attorney General Richard Head, who told Reuters, "The primary purpose of a plate is to identify motor vehicles, not to engage in public debate."

The New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union doesn't see it that way, though, arguing that the DMV's position is "unconstitutionally vague, overbroad and viewpoint discriminatory," according to court filings obtained by Reuters. And while it does sound like this is a case of someone simply exercising his First Amendment rights, we're left wondering if driving around with a license plate calling people with guns and ticket books liars won't draw the wrong type of attention to your cause.

Have your say about the issue down in Comments. Is human right, or is his plate really that inappropriate?

Wait. The state's Associate Attorney General's name is Richard Head? This is way too good.

Did Reuters just quote Richard Head? Seriously?

The two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

Im wondering how many people call him David still, and how many people laugh or refuse to call him human. As for the plate, its actually a lie because not all cops lie or are bad. I wouldnt complain though this guy sounds like trouble and no one would ever forget what kinda car he drives with that plate!

The funny thing is that the whole "human" thing is reminiscent of the 2007 comedy "Superbad" where a guy changes is name to "McLovin". Just like David he doesn't have a surname. You'd think it can't be real, but apparently there are really people with no first name and last name. "Human" isn't even capitalized haha :)

The DMV could have saved time and money by just issuing the requested plate! It was "human" who was going to pay the price once he started driving around with that plate on!

It's pretty smart, actually. At first you might think it's super foolish. Every cop he passes will look for an excuse to pull this guy over. But then that's exactly what this guy wants. He's HOPING he gets pulled over and doubly hoping that cop makes a mistake. Dash cams in every direction. Let it go, and leave him alone. Who the heck cares anyway? The best thing you can do to someone desperate for attention is ignore them.

Headline should be changed immediately. I recommend "********* represents state against Human in case of Vanity."

Surely, in the spirit of absurd name changing, he could change his name to David Copslie, make the same (stupid) point and probably get the plate as well since it's not "cops lie", it's just his name...

I'd like to think that I'm a reasonable human being. I also think that the license plate "GR8GOVT" is offensive to good taste.
