Hitting the gas pedal instead of the brake is an altogether too common occurrence, one that often carries deadly consequences. Thankfully, that wasn't the case here. ABC News is reporting that three victims in a crash at a San Diego, CA, restaurant suffered only minor injuries after a woman drove her car through the front door. Surveillance video captured the whole episode.

The driver was pulling into a parking spot when she apparently confused the pedals and plowed into a patron exiting the busy restaurant. After her Honda Accord entered the building, she hit two more diners before swerving to the right to narrowly avoided hitting others. "Officials said the car's brakes and transmission were working, and the woman was not drinking or doing drugs," according to ABC.

It really truly never ceases to amaze me just how stupid people are. I have never in my life confused the gas and brake pedal w/ one another. I'm at a loss just imagining how it's possible. Like, how can you seriously do that on accident?? And the sad thing is, this dumbass is the reason why insurance rates are through the roof for everyone else. And why even though I'm a safe driver, I'm always looking for that and preparing for that one idiot, like this one, to ruin my day and or kill me. Ridiculous. She should lose her license for a while. I'm sick of seeing sh!t like this while they continue to hand out driver's licenses like candy on Halloween.

Agreed. Even if you're too incompetent to tell which pedal your foot is over based on its position in the footwell, the pedals themselves feel completely different under your foot due to shape and in some cases even due to whether they're top-hinged or floor-hinged! Just keep your heel in the same position on the floormat and if your foot is tilted left you'll know you're over the brake, and if it's pointed right you'll know you're on the gas. It's not rocket science, people!! And yes it has to be said, of course this was a woman driver.

im at a loss for words, reafffirming my observation that most people that have licences shouldn't "well it was just an accident! i'm sorry, the only mistake i've ever made while driving!" you shouldn't make mistakes while driving. ever. people's lives are at stake. licence gone.

Make every car a standard and if people can't find the cells to sort out having three pedals and a lever then motion won't occur. We have dumbed down the task of driving too far.

Of course, this is a reflection of contemporary USA society: dumbed down to a pathetically low lower common denominator.

How much more proof do you possibly need that many people today are just too stupid/distracted to drive.

I am not sure why would anyone would have their foot on the gas pedal instead of break when they are pulling into a parking space. The car will move itself when it's on D for automatic trans. If anything, people should be ready to stop.. not ready to accelerate.

Are you assuming the driver thinks while he/she drives?

I think if you're going to question other people's intelligence you should learn the difference between "break" and "brake". Moron.

no need to call him a moron. Everybody reading his post was intelligent enough to get his point, but you had to flex your superior intellect. On behalf of a couple people, thank you

This is why we need driving proficiency exams after licenses are granted.

Sorry, did you ever have a European car? Left side clutch, center brake, right side gas. As anywhere in the world. Difference: over here drivers' exam is not for fun...

That's the sort of accident that ended up crippling me. I was at a bus stop and stood up to check the time and a 15 yr old girl who was practicing parking plowed into the back of the bus bench ramming it into me and sent me flying. She had mistaken the gas for the brakes and floored it when the SUV didn't stop. That was a little over 3 years ago. I lost 2 jobs and my home and I still can't work. I finally broke down and got a wheelchair so I can go further than a block away from home. Around the time I was recovering from knee surgery another driver mistook reverse for forward and ended up pinning a grandmother and one of her grandchildren to a wall. I wish people were more aware when they are driving. You little goof can have devastating results for other people.

Here in California driver's license standards have been continually lowered over the years. The reason is that the cost to retest is very high for the DMV. Yet, legislators insist on lowering the retest fees to look like they're being good guys.

People getting hurt is tragic (luckily not too badly in this case) but there's also economic hurt for the owner and their employees. If that were my restaurant it would mean closing down for reconstruction; easily 3-6 weeks given how slow some insurance companies work to file and fund your claim. When you finally open up shop business will be slow before it gets back to usual turnaround till the word gets out that you're open again. Not to mention the lawsuits the customers will hold against you for not maintaining a safe retail environment. That's a whole world of hurt.
