2011 BMW 1 Series M – Click above for high-res image gallery

We already told you that BMW has decided to limit production of the 1 Series M, making it a one-year proposition. Now, we may know a bit more about this decision. The German automaker has reportedly filed trademarks on the terms "M2" and "BMW M2." Where is the 2 Series upon which these terms could apply? Rumor has it that the next-generation BMW 1 Series will grow up and become the 2 Series.

Of course, a BMW 2 Series is not a foregone conclusion, but it's always a wise idea to stay a step ahead. At the very least, BMW is making sure that the M2 name will be ready should it choose to go the 2 Series route.

Dear BMW please do not make the 1 series any larger. It is already too fat and needs to lose several hundred pounds or 150 kilos for you crazy rest of the world. :p

"The most irrelevant and unnecessary car in the world just got a sequel" LOL, you talk like you know xD Here's the strategy : - 1 series will be the Hatch (3/5 doors) - 2 series will be the Coupe and Cabrio - 3 series will be the Sedan, Touring and GT -4 series will be the Coupe, Cabrio and Gran Coupe (the M3 Coupe will remain the M3 name, won't be M4, I know, confusing right?) This info was told by a BMW insider, so, it's a reliable source..

makes perfectly sense. still i hope bmw would get a real sportscar, not just pimped up stuff like they do. (and don't tell me the i8 is gonna be a sportscar, come on..)

It appears BMW is just trying to be all things to all people. Apparently they are letting no segment gone untouched.

either it's gonna be the coupé/cabrio/gran coupé of the new 1 series OR it's gonna be the m1 successor! bmw desperately needs a sports car so i guess both is plausible.

This car will always look like a fat pregnant cat to me with that saggy looking mid section. Why all that mid-car "style" BMW, it's not necessary.

They're just rebranding the next generation 1 Series Coupe and adding an M edition. It's not a new car to slot in between the 1 and 3. But I'm sure you knew that...

Perhaps the M2 refers to the successor to the M1. Wasn't there a report recently saying that BMW is working on a M1 successor?
