VIDEO: Audi drives R8 straight into the heart of Ferrari country

Click above to watch the commercial of an R8 V10 cruising through Maranello
The residents of Maranello used to the sight of rakish red two-door sheetmetal roaring under the impulse of several hundred horsepower – and they still do. Except when that metal hides a ten-cylinder engine and wears four rings on its hood. In this Audi commercial depicting an R8 V10 on a slow cruise through Ferrari country, the locals are shown to have a decidedly different reaction upon realizing that the German barbarians are no longer content to hang out at the town gates.
If you want to see some excited Latins, follow the jump to watch the commercial. Hat tip to Kobla!

Great idea but the commercial it self was not very interesting.

I bet Ferrari is kind of pissed they didn't think of offering an off-firing V10 supercar.

Now if only the Ingolstadt Bavarians could enter the F1 to rip those Red Communists a new one.

screw F1. the future is in LeMans, and Audi already owns that...
JDM Life 3:16PM (5/12/2009)
I think audi is getting a lil too "happy" with this car...yea its good....
But did they forget about the 599, Enzo and the f430 scuderia....
I think its time to go back into your skin Audi....

BOB, for the price point that the R8 is aiming for, it does not matter. That's not to say you have to be in bed with Montezemolo just to OWN one of those Red overpriced & over hyped Stallions.
Just because you have limited accessibility to those things (have to own 3 or 4 other vehicles to own the next generation one) does not mean the vehicle is God-like.
Even Leno hates them.
Lambo > Ferrari any day.

lester - you are right on the mark. +1

Lester you more jelous then anything.
When since Ferraris were EVER over hype? im sorry but the force and sound from the roaring V12 of a 599 is NOTHING close to over hyped i can promise you that.
The performance of a Enzo ( will out run lambos best on the track is i may say ) is nothing short of excellent.
The cars are just that damn good and damn gorgeous, if you dont see or understand that..then it becomes a personal issue.
Oh yea..
Horse > Bull
ANYDAY.
Protzenegger 4:01PM (5/12/2009)
"Gorgeous" is a matter of personal taste. I, for one, haven't thought of any Ferrari as "gorgeous" since the demise of 456M, 360 F1 and 575M. The new FXX cars I think are badass, but not gorgeous. I won't judge you for liking the stock 599, Enzo and the rest, but there is nothing to "understand" here.
BigMcLargeHuge 4:19PM (5/12/2009)
Why did you even mention the Enzo and the GTB? Audi doesn't need to bother with the ultra-limited $300K-$1M models.
The closest competitor to the R8 V10 that Ferrari will have will be the F430, and there all your V12 talk becomes pretty useless.
The R8 V10 is a mid-engined 500hp well-styled supercar. It is perfectly within reason to target Ferrari's volume market.
And doing so will upset the greatest number of Ferrari fans. So the commercial works.

Ferrari in one of the few (if not the only) true 100% red-blooded supercars left. Lambo is bastardised by the Germans anyway. And they are a Racing Team first, a car manufacturer second. Respect where respect is due.

@ Redline
Im glad you see what I see.
I think these people or forgeting how great Ferrari is. They have come a very long way are their cars are marvelous have always been marlvelous . They have never changed they still do what they first started off doing. Building gorgeous race cars that can be driven on the street.
Ferrari FTW Always.
BoxerFanatic 3:27PM (5/12/2009)
That wasn't too bad.
The screen shot is way off, and makes the car look orange.
Normally I like brighter red and blue cars, but something about R8 just screams to be painted steel blue/silver with silver carbon fiber, or charcoal gray with dark carbon fiber. The car just looks like a jet.
Too bad the V12 TDI's transparent roof panel with a NACA duct hasn't become a build option. That would make the V10 bodywork updates complete. A direct gasoline injected V12 engine would make the car ultimate.
...Just something about an engine with cylinders divisible by 5 that is odd. 8 with forced induction, or 12 cylinders with modest displacement and high flow intake and exhaust just sound insane, with similar or more power than a V10.

but Audi did the 5 cylinder thing for quite a while, so a V10 makes sense for Audi
