Land Rover introduces 2008 Range Rover Westminster

The Range Rover has long been known as one of the best off-road vehicles on the planet, and it goes about its dirty business in class and style, if not snobbery. The current Rangey isn't getting any younger, so to keep its top dog fresh, Land Rover is offering North Americans 500 of its new Westminster edition models. Equipped with a 400-horsepower supercharged V8, the usual interior appointments, and ten-spoke 20" rims, the Westminster has the niceties its prospective buyers are looking for. Real wood is prevalent, as Land Rover incorporates a 14-piece lined oak extended wood veneer and a lined oak anthracite gear shift knob. The wood trim is further accentuated by special edition "java black" leather seats with tan inserts and tipping.
Of course, all the luxury and exclusivity that accompanies the Westminster comes at a price so steep you practically need another Land Rover to carry the cash you need to pay for it. If you've got $105,600 burning a hole in your pocket and an off-roading fantasy that will likely never be fulfilled, the Range Rover Westminster is in your price range. Unfortunately, we seem to be a little short on both funds and 60 degree grades here in the Detroit-area suburbs.

With Land Rover due to change hands at any minute....it looks like Ford is sending them off with a bang, instead of a whimper.
I guess my idea of money well spent is in need of adjustment. Why would anyone spend $105, 000 on something and take it off road, even if it is more than capable? Land/Range Rovers have such a steep deprecitiation curve it would make more sense to buy a slightly less limited edition model new, and an old R-R as a "beater" if you really need one for off roading. I mean, it's not like you can easily spot the differences between an '08 and an '01 R-R.

Anything at nosebleed price levels has steep depreciation, unless it is a model in short supply.
Let's just compare the Jaguar XJ (or XJR or VDP) and the big Lexus. The Lexus commands more at resale, but when you consider how much more was paid for the fully loaded and decked out Lexus (which will never have the cachet of the big Jag), there is no discernable difference, except if you are a customer of a used 04 version of either one. You will pay a bit more for the used Lexus, but the person who originally bought the Jag (who got a bigger discount off MSRP than Lexus was offering) will have made out just as well as the Lexus buyer even with the somewhat lower trade-in).
Land Rovers will suck no more of your funds over time than the Lexus-forgettable-whatever that is comparable (the Lexus clone of the Land Cruiser). If you pay close to 100K for anything, expect it to be worth a lot less in three years. Still, if you can afford to do that, what's the problem?
wormyguy 6:40PM (12/22/2007)
Gregg, good point, but you neglected to mention that the Jag seller will have to keep his car on sale longer because there are fewer people who want to buy it, and he probably will have spent $1000s on repairs that the Lexus seller didn't.

So Land Rover's taking a page from the Mustang playbook?
"Look! Our product's been on the market for a few years with minimal changes, but here's a special edition! Isn't it shiny?"

Yep, one page the 500 pages from Mustang's book

Oh, and I forgot to add, any grandma could tell the diff between an 01 and 08 Roller. The 01 looks exactly like a current Bentley Arnage, because it IS a Bentley Arnage with a different grill. The current RR is built by BMW and has the look of an elegant locomotive. You either love it or hate it, but you absolutely cannot ignore it.

a Range Rover on cut springs...never knew that cutting range Rover springs commanded a 30k price increase...well, off to the neighbors
"hey, you know that if i ripped out your suspension and cut it in half you could get 30k!"
yeah, right.

Dangling sugar-plums before Tata Motors' eyes and pocket book. "look at all the $30K premium
versions you can offer..."
Next they will offer the "Jaguar Grey-Poupon XJ 8" for 125,000.00 and all the palo fiero it can carry.
Still it is a very ni-i-ice vehicle.

There has been a westminster edition Range Rover off and on since 2002.
The 2002 model was 75,000 MSRP
There was no 2003 westminster
2004 Model was 85,000 or so MSRP
2005 model was also around 85,000 MSRP
2006 Model was right around 100,000 MSRP
There was no 2007 westminster
Its not like they are just rolling out another special edition for no reason.
