GM Certified Used Vehicles get same powertrain warranty as new models

We reported just two days ago that General Motors would be making its entire Certified Used Vehicle inventory available for sale on Cars.com. Today the General announced that each of those vehicles will now be sold with the same 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty that's included with the purchase of a brand new 2007 model. The warranty for these vehicles that range in model year from 2002 to 2006 begins with their original in-service date and is fully transferable, as well. Just like the powertrain warranty on the new models, this one covers components in the engine, transmission, transfer case where applicable and the final drive assemblies. Today's announcement only covers vehicles from Buick, Chevy, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac, however. The rest of GM's brands have their own certified used vehicle programs, though Saturn is expected to announce the same warranty for its used vehicles later this year. Cadillac, Saab and HUMMER certified used vehicles are already offered with a 6-year/100,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty.

DETROIT - General Motors today announced that it will provide consumers with a fully transferable five-year/100,000-mile* powertrain limited warranty with no deductible, on all GM Certified Used Vehicles, the industry's top-selling manufacturer-certified used vehicle brand.
"Last fall, GM unveiled the best new car and truck coverage of any full-line manufacturer in the nation**, letting customers know that every one of our 2007 light-duty vehicles delivers a superior level of quality," said Troy Clarke, GM group vice president and president, GM North America. "We're very pleased to now offer that same level of confidence with every GM Certified Used Vehicle from Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac."
The new GM Certified Used Vehicles five-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty with no deductible, available on all 2002-2006 GM Certified Used Vehicles, is effective from the vehicle's original in-service date.

"Our GM Certified Used dealers have been asking for this because it adds a real point of differentiation for our program," McVeigh added. "GM Certified Used does an outstanding job of bringing in new customers, and this enhancement will only add to that."
The new GM Certified 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty with no deductible applies only to GM Certified Used Vehicles (Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac) brands. Saturn Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are expected to announce a similar program later this year.

Wow. This certainly won't hurt the General's ambitions to get resale value out of the basement.
Seems like a particularly sweet deal for second-hand buyers, too, as most of GM's aging/"proven" powertrains already get top marks in CR's reliability surveys.
Waiting for AZMike's "I told you so..." :-)

Some warranty is better than no warranty at all, but getting GM to honor it is the really hard part.

I agree with Gardiner Westbound. A transferable warranty WOULD make a used GM car or truck more attractive....assuming dealers will honor it. They don't exactly have an outstanding rep for honoring the FACTORY warranties on NEW cars and trucks.

Gardiner, do you have any proof of that or are you just saying that because this is a post about GM? Based on most people's accounts, GM dealerships are much more willing to honor warranty claims than Toyota dealerships.

"Based on most people's accounts, GM dealerships are much more willing to honor warranty claims than Toyota dealerships."
I've worked at a Toyota dealership for 15 years and while I'm sure there are dealerships out there with ambitious service managers looking to pad their margins, this is definitely not the norm.

If the warranty starts with the "original" in-service date, the '02's will not be eligible.
Heck even a large number of '03 models won't be eligible. For that matter, the early production '04's won't either.
So, you can get it on the '05's. That's the only year you'll benefit on since the '06's already have it.

The Chrysler group has been doing this for years now. Nice way to play catch up GM.

#7, what do you mean? If I bought today a 2002 model year car that went into service on December 1, 2003 and currently has 80,000 miles on it, why wouldn't I have another 22 months+ and 20K miles left on the warranty?

Definitely a smart move on GM's part. They secure a larger audience with their entry into cars.com, and then they show that they are confident in their used cars with the warranty.
BTW - I would expect many of the 2002 models will have in-service dates of late 2001 or early 2002, so the warranty should apply to some 2002's, and to almost all 2003's and up.

I purchased a GM Certified Used Car in November 0f 2007, will my car be included?

Delaerships get paid from the Manufacturer when they honor the warranty. My local service department jumps at warranty issues so GETTING A DEALERSHIP TO HONOR THE WARRANTY IS a win win for dealerships and customers alike.

Great move. Since demand is already snapping new GM cars off the lots the next logical move is to market their used offerings
Will the warranty be good on these engines?
