Paris Motor Show: Ligier Be Two

The Paris Motor Show isn't all about luxury and supercars, and Eric discovered this example of the oddities on display alongside the more glamorous hardware.
Ligier Automobiles, a French company with an extensive competition history that includes its eponymous Formula 1 team, is displaying what may be the ultimate in "entry-level" vehicles - the Be Two quadricycle.
The space-frame Be Two is powered, if that's the word, by a 505 cc two-cylinder diesel engine, putting out a ground-pounding 4KW (about 5.5 hp) through a continuously-variable transmission. No performance figures are given, but more information about the Be Two, and its big brother, the Be Up, are available at the company's website.

5hp from 500cc's? Seems like a print mistake to me. I'm pretty sure my push-lawnmower has more power than that.

Thanks for finding these transportation alternatives. It's exciting to see so many companies trying to find (create) a niche. It's this type of deep and detailed coverage (thanks for all the photos!) that makes AutoBlog such a great read.

I'm Flintstone. Fred Flintstone. Now how am I supposed to move this car when my feet can't touch the ground?

the deal with the HP rating is that its a diesel.
my 02 TDI beetle only makes 90 HP, but has about 155 ft-lbs torque
it probably has plenty of torque, though

It only gets 4 kW because the regulations dictate this as the maximum amount of power for the vehicle to be eligible for registration as a light quadricycle. And the reason it's a diesel is that the regulations also dicate a maximum of 50cc for gasoline engines. There are also heavy quadricycles with the maximum power of 13.6 kW. These regulations are based on moped and motorcycle ones.

Looks like an Atom that has lost interest in it's career and really let itself go.
