The dust has barely settled from the debut of Saturn's Sky roadster, and Saturn is already unveiling a high-performance variant. The big news is under the hood, where the Red Line model gets the Ecotec turbocharged direct-injection engine, good for an inspiring 260 hp at 5300 rpm and 260 ft-lb of torque at 2500 rpm. At 2.1 hp per cubic inch of displacement, the turbo Ecotec sets a General Motors record for specific output.
The Red Line will grace your local Saturn dealer's showroom this fall.
We'll have more coverage from our crack team of NYIAS reporters, but in the meantime, enjoy the press release and more photos after the jump.

Official Press Release:
Saturn Expands Sky Lineup With Red Line Performance Variant
NEW YORK – Saturn continues its product revitalization with the 2007 Sky Red Line performance roadster, which is debuting at the 2006 New York International Auto Show. The Red Line, available at Saturn retailers this fall, builds on the Sky’s established performance character, offering even more power and sportier driving dynamics combined with a bold design and driver-focused interior.
The Red Line gets a boost in performance from an Ecotec turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, GM’s first direct injection offering in North America. It produces 260 horsepower* (194 kw) at 5300 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque* (353 Nm) at 2500 rpm, making it GM’s highest specific output engine ever at 2.1 horsepower per cubic inch of displacement (130 hp / 97 kw per liter) and the most powerful engine in the Ecotec family.
Gasoline direct injection technology helps the Ecotec engine produce more power while maintaining the lower fuel consumption of a small displacement port-injected engine.
With direct injection, fuel is delivered directly to the combustion chamber to create a more complete burn of the air/fuel mixture. Less fuel is required to produce the equivalent horsepower, especially at normal cruising speeds, of a conventional port-injection combustion system.
Direct injection technology works well with turbocharging and helps deliver a great balance of power and economy.
Other Red Line technical highlights include:
* Standard torque-sensing limited-slip differential
* Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control
* Performance-tuned suspension
Technical elements also standard on the 2007 Sky roadster include:
* Four-wheel independent short/long arm suspension for optimal handling and stability
* Coil-over Bilstein monotube shocks for excellent wheel control and road isolation
* Hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion power steering for quick, responsive vehicle control
* Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS for excellent stopping performance
* Wide track for excellent stability and superior handling
* Near 50/50 weight distribution for balanced handling
* Structural tunnel design and hydroformed longitudinal frame rails for a stiff body that results in greater vehicle responsiveness and better overall feel
The Red Line also features several unique interior and exterior differences compared to the Sky roadster, including dual exhaust with chrome polished outlets, 18-inch polished aluminum alloy wheels, and specific front lower fascia with large brake cooling vents and black headlamp bezels.
The interior features a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, unique seatback and floormat embroidery, metallic sill plates, stainless steel pedal covers, Red Line-specific gauges and a digital boost gauge included in the Driver Information Center.
The Sky Red Line has numerous safety features, including dual-stage frontal air bags, GM’s Passenger Sensing System, four-wheel disc brakes with standard ABS, side-impact door beams, three-point safety belts with pretentioners and load-limiting retractors, and more.

Great vehicle, good to see GM on the move. I'm still not sure what they're trying to do with Saturn. But if they keep putting out vehicles like this, who's cares what the brand is.....
Ant @ Apr 11th 2006 3:49PM
The Sky Redline looks awesome. It's way more gorgeous than its Solstice sister. I even dig the Redline logo! It's almost as cool as BMW's ///M :)

And good luck finding one without a "$5k market premium" on it...
MikeWarner @ Apr 11th 2006 3:59PM
I'd love to know more about this engine. Is it a varient of the GM Z20LET engine or is it based on the 2.2 GM unit? Will be interesting to learn more in the future when these hit the road. Still - fingers crossed for a right hand drive Vauxhall variant.
Kwyjibo @ Apr 11th 2006 4:06PM
this thing is basically just a Solstice GXP living in Saturn skin, no?
i wonder what it weighs...and looks like a 5sp, but i hope it's a 6.
260ft-lbs of torque would be fun though...
petel @ Apr 11th 2006 4:12PM
5sp auto or manual. No 6sp on this car. Same as the solstice gxp but better looking
ActiveTuning @ Apr 11th 2006 4:13PM
Does this mean it will be able to run in the 13's in the 1/4 stock? 2800 lbs + 260hp...

A cool looking roadster!
What other brands do they plan to rebadge this under in the future? Chevy? Buick? Saab? Cadillac?
apollo322 @ Apr 11th 2006 4:33PM
Nicely done, with that kind of power this is finally worthy of being a true roadster. Good job GM! (long time since I said that!)
Jon Lind @ Apr 11th 2006 4:47PM
I'm usually totally opposed to rebadging, but if they're bringing over Euro-spec cars, that's fine. "Badge engineering" isn't good when they're putting Cadillac badges on Pontiacs, but it's o.k. when they're putting Acrua badges on cars that otherwise wouldn't be sold here (TSX=Euro Accord).
That's what I think is happening here, and I'm thrilled to see it. I prefer the European philosophy on driving (direct steering, firm and controlled suspension, good control rationality, good economy, etc.) but we're continually told that they can't afford to bring in the Euro variants, or that we're too stupid to enjoy them.
GM must have figured that they had the Saturn brand laying around rotting and a bunch of cars in Europe that aren't quite like anything sold here. Their solution is to bring a line of cars we'd never normally see to market. Excellent!
Too bad the cars are some of the worst in Europe. Oh well, no scenario is perfect, even for GM, but it's a start.
That One Person @ Apr 11th 2006 4:53PM
#2 I saw three of them yesterday. Two were red and one was black. Pretty damn good looking. Better looking than the Solstice in my opinion.
iQuack @ Apr 11th 2006 5:09PM
All GM needs is one line of great cars to compete with Toyota and Honda.
Perhaps Saturn could be that car line once the ION is replaced with a compact that doesn't look ridiculous.
The SKY, AURA, and Outlook should be winners if they're as good mechanically as they look. The VUE is pretty good as it is now.
Could be that Lutz's efforts will pay off. It's likely that if Lutz had been at GM at the time, the Saturn LS and the ION horrors would never have been introduced in the first place because they're such obvious styling losers.
Aki @ Apr 11th 2006 5:32PM
That grille reminds me of the new civic sedan--but it's a positive step for GM. Interior and exterior looks pretty nice. Too bad Saturn dealers will trash their once-cushy rep of not being punks and doing dealer markups. They just need a classy sedan and something a whole lot better than the Ion.
I think Saturn = Opel would be the best strategy for GM. Bring out Euro cars here so that they don't need to resort to wretched Badgineering. Who wants Pontiac Cobalt--Yay!
Saturn Sky @ Apr 11th 2006 5:38PM
Im expecting the Sky to outsell the Solstice. It's a much nicer looking vehicle.
If you're interested in the Saturn Sky, check out http://www.redlineforums.com and the new Sky section!
Richard Warren @ Apr 11th 2006 5:52PM
It's nice looking, like the interior
Dave Lawson @ Apr 11th 2006 6:34PM
There seems to be a misconception that the Sky is an Opel in Saturn skin. This platform is a North American car.
But, if GM can keep the secret under wraps a bit longer, maybe this misconception can be worked into the status of urban myth! That surely can't hurt sales.
Note to Saturn dealers: Blank out anything on your demo's that show that they're made in Delaware......
Eric @ Apr 11th 2006 7:05PM
Wow. Now I don't have to get out my puke bucket every time I drive by a Saturn dealership.
