Sales of the inexpensive, yet sporty Volvo EX30 has hit a wall in the U.S.
Volvo’s EV30 was one of the most anticipated electric vehicles to hit our shores this year, but it never did. With a massive increase in tariffs, equalling 100-percent on Chinese automobiles, deliveries were delayed.

Volvo is partnered with Chinese auto-production giant Geely, and the EX30 (among other EV Volvos) shares its architecture with Geely products. The EX30 uses the SEA (Scalable Electric Architecture or Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform developed by Geely. In fact, the EX30 was sketched out and styled in Sweden. Technically and mechanically, Geely developed the EV in China.
What is the Volvo EX30?
Built for four people, the Volvo EX30 is the smallest vehicle offered by the automaker. Range was expected to float between 250 and 265 miles, depending on the drivetrain. Power ranges from 268 to 422 horsepower, depending on the option for rear, or all-wheel drive. Pricing was expected to start in the mid $30,000 zone.
What truly made the EX30 unique was its utilitarian platform, minimalist interior and demure footprint. It looks striking at any angle, and there’s a slight air of whimsy about the overall design. Very compelling for folks who see it in person.

Initially, the Volvo EX30 was intended to be an entry-level, highly affordable electric vehicle.. I say “initially” because it could become much pricier with the current and upcoming push for tariffs on Chinese goods. What was affordable, and a potential game changer, could become unobtainable.
Fortunately, Volvo recently announced that they will indeed sell the EX30 here
Mid November of 2024, Volvo made their intention to sell an inexpensive version of the EX30 in our market. This is the first time in months that Volvo has directly addressed the issue. In the past, Volvo PR has been unresponsive.
“The EX30 has been one of the most popular EVs in Europe and will be coming to the U.S. this year with a very attractive and competitive starting price for the 422 horsepower Twin Motor Performance model with 253 miles of range. A Single Motor variant is scheduled to come to the U.S. later in 2025 with an even more affordable starting price” - Volvo Car USA
Currently, production is taking place at the Zhangjiakou, China factory. An automotive assembly plant in Ghent, Belgium is nearly ready to begin EX30 production. This might help production to start, for our market.

Something to keep in mind: tariffs on lithium batteries sourced in China have increased from 7.5 to 25-percent. Thus, one of the many questions revolves around where the battery will be produced.
The future for this, and other EVs, (and Volvo) is a bit cloudy
We honestly don’t know what types of new, or additional tariffs are going to hit the market in the next year. Changes are expected with the new administration that will affect the industry. There is a possibility that the Volvo EX30 will have a limited run in the United States, until some of these issues are sorted out. ‘

Volvo has the Ridgeville, Berkeley County, South Carolina plant operating, but they are not slated to build the EX30 – yet. At 2.3-million square-feet, it’s a huge facility, which may have enough space for a new production line. That, and locally sourced battery components, could mitigate painful tariff inflation.
We expect to learn a lot more about the Volvo EX30’s return in the next few months. Stay tuned.
