According to UAW president Ron Gettelfinger, the complicated deal between GM,
Delphi and the UAW is nowhere near completion: “Right now, everything’s up in the air.” The Detroit News also
reports that Gettelfinger doesn’t feel bound by Delphi’s latest deadline of March 30 for completing the
negotiations.
On the Delphi side of the table, the deadline appears to be taken much more seriously, with a
spokesperson saying that the bankrupt parts maker doesn’t intend to draw out the talks any longer, after twice
extending its deadline for a wage settlement.
Delphi has threatened to file a motion with the bankrupcy
court to have the current labor contracts thrown-out if a suitable agreement can’t be reached in what it considers to
be a reasonable timeframe.
In the UAW’s last official statement on the status of the talks March 9, the union
responded to media reports that a deal was imminent by stating, “Nothing could be further from the
truth.”
