Formula E is finally getting the attention it deserves from the world’s automakers. Following closely after
Audi and
Jaguar’s announcements to enter Formula E, Mercedes-Benz signed an “option agreement” to enter the FIA Formula E Championship during the racing series’ fifth season.

If Mercedes enters Formula E, it will be one of two new entries in the 2018 or 2019 season, subject to FIA approval, of course. With the addition of Mercedes-Benz, Formula E will expand from 10 to 12 teams. The move to enter Formula E makes sense as the automaker looks to test electric technology before implementing it on its road-going vehicles.

The fifth season of Formula E will see major changes, as the all-electric racing series will ditch the current setup of having two vehicles per driver to just one. Instead of allowing drivers to swap vehicles mid-race, the racing series will force the drivers to use one racecar throughout the entire hour-long race.

Mercedes is a force to be reckoned in
Formula One, having claimed the constructor’s championship in 2014 and 2015 seasons. Its success in the racing series is leading the way for the automaker to
create an F1-based hypercar for the road. An entry into Formula E could pave the way for
Mercedes-Benz’s lineup of Tesla fighters.

Formula E’s current entries include Audi, Jaguar, Renault, Faraday Future, and Mahindra. The third season of the series is set to being this weekend in Hong Kong.
