Police say one man died and another man was hospitalized after their car plunged into a Philadelphia river when the driver accelerated in the wrong direction by mistake.

Officials say the vehicle went into the Schuylkill River just after 5 p.m. Tuesday northwest of the city center.

Police said the two were trying to leave a parking lot but the driver mistakenly put the vehicle in drive rather than reverse and accelerated, causing the vehicle to enter the water

A police spokeswoman says a 30-year-old passenger was able to get out of the car and is in stable condition at Hahnemann Hospital. But the 31-year-old driver, Devon Womack, was later pulled from the water by divers and was later pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the hospital.
