Mark Fields, Ford’s head
honcho of the Americas, notes that the GT was only ever supposed to be produced between the company’s centennial
in 2003 and this year’s 40th anniversary of the GT40’s victory over Ferrari at Le Mans. As such, Ford will
cap the end of its solo supercar’s career by auctioning off an early-built 2005 Ford GT VIN 00003.
The car was originally produced for marketing events and auto shows, but one lucrative and lucky S.O.B. at the
Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction this weekend will get to take this show pony home. The proceeds from the auction
will go to benefit the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation, a favorite beneficiary of Ford’s.
