Cadillac Isn’t Done With Gas Sedans Yet

Change of Charge

Cadillac once appeared ready to phase out its combustion models after the luxury marque targeted an all-electric lineup by 2030. But like Volvo and several other automakers, Cadillac softened its plans to allow combustion cars to remain in the coming years. One of them is the CT5, the brand’s luxury midsize sedan.

It was confirmed last year that a next-generation CT5 was in the works. More recently, GM Authority reported when buyers could expect to see the major overhaul. According to the publication, the new version is expected to arrive during the second half of 2028 for the 2029 model year.

The Waiting Game Begins

While that timeline could feel like a long wait, the CT5 received a facelift for the 2025 model year, making it roughly in line with a typical model-update cycle – though some alternatives include the recently updated Lexus ES and, for more money, the Genesis G80. A performance-oriented version is also available in the form of the CT5-V Blackwing, one of America’s last traditional performance sedans, featuring a V8 engine and a 6-speed manual transmission.

Speaking of which, the CT5-V Blackwing is also reportedly returning with the next-gen model – an interesting development given Cadillac’s continued efforts to expand its electric lineup.

For reference, the automaker currently offers several EVs, including the Optiq, Lyriq, and Vistiq. Even the Escalade is now available with an all-electric powertrain in the form of the Escalade IQ. Sitting at the top of the range is the made-to-order Celestiq, an ultra-luxury liftback that competes against the likes of the Rolls-Royce Spectre.

The next-gen CT5 is expected to ride on an updated version of GM’s Alpha 2 platform, internally known as Alpha 2-2. The architecture is also expected to underpin the returning Chevrolet Camaro and a new Buick sedan.

What the Current Car Brings

For now, the 2026 Cadillac CT5 starts at $49,200, excluding destination charges. It is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four producing 237 horsepower. Output increases to 668 hp in the CT5-V Blackwing, courtesy of a supercharged 6.2-liter V8. This flagship model starts at $98,900.

While the CT5 is expected to return in a market with a growing number of electrified options, there are no signs of a potential successor to the smaller CT4 yet. Meanwhile, the XT6 is also set to return and could appeal to buyers who want a three-row vehicle without going fully electric like the Vistiq.
