When you see the word ‘lifetime’ plastered on something, you know it has a series of asterisks and disclaimers attached. Of course, it looks good on paper, but we all know that nothing lasts forever.

That’s especially true with lifetime fluids, or anything that helps keep a car running. The thing is, not everyone is well-versed in vehicle maintenance, and words like ‘lifetime’ or ‘maintenance-free’ may be taken literally.

The Case

Such wording has landed BMW a class action lawsuit from owners. It’s been claimed that the front differential of xDrive all-wheel drive-equipped vehicles has been failing prematurely despite the lifetime fluid for the said part.

According to the plaintiffs, BMW advised that changing the front differential fluid is no longer needed; the company allegedly said it should last the lifetime of the vehicle. Previously, it was advised to change it, but by the mid-2010s, BMW said otherwise.

The case says three models are affected by the part’s premature failure. These are the G05 X5, G06 X6, and the G07 X7, all of which are popular vehicles in their respective segments. Specific model years weren’t mentioned, but these likely refer to all models throughout the production run through 2025 (as the suit mentioned), assuming the plaintiffs have different model years.

What the Plaintiffs are Saying

From the case file, it reads, “The reality is that because the front differential failure generally occurs after 50,000 miles or after four years, BMW NA’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty no longer covers this failure. Consumers, like Plaintiff, are instead forced to pay thousands of dollars to BMW NA and its dealers for a replacement front differential, which works to the financial benefit of BMW NA and its authorized dealerships but very much to the financial detriment of Class Vehicle owners like Plaintiff and the Class Members.”

Those who filed the case further added that the front differentials on their BMW crossovers have failed prematurely despite the assurance of the lifetime fluid. It was also emphasized that while the front diffs didn’t need fluid changes, the rears did. Plaintiffs allege it was “part of a marketing strategy that was aimed to tout lower service costs and less frequent and onerous service intervals for the Class Vehicles.”

This isn’t the first time BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive has faced a class action lawsuit. In December 2025, a suit claimed a transfer case defect caused drivability issues that left owners footing a bill in the five digits.
