General Motors is boosting the long-haul capability of its upcoming half-ton trucks. When the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 arrive, models equipped with the popular 3.0-liter Duramax diesel will feature a significantly larger Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank. This upgrade marks a major shift for the upcoming truck platform as GM pushes to improve towing efficiency and cross-country range.

The larger DEF tank pairs directly with the new 34-gallon extended-range fuel tanks arriving across the half-ton lineup. For drivers who rely on the Duramax for heavy towing, this means stretching the distance between mandatory fill-ups and minimizing service visits for routine maintenance. This diesel upgrade arrives alongside sweeping changes to the broader engine lineup, which will also introduce larger displacement options and heftier price tags for traditional gasoline buyers.

Range vs Versatility

According to a recent report from GM Authority, GM fitting these larger fluid reservoirs forces a tough design trade-off. To squeeze both the bigger DEF and the massive 34-gallon fuel tank beneath the floorboards, engineers had to completely eliminate the rear under-seat storage bins. For years, owners have relied on these hidden compartments to securely stash expensive tools, emergency gear, and everyday items.

Losing this built-in utility confirms earlier reports that the redesigned trucks would suffer from shrinking cabin volume compared to the outgoing 2026 models. Moving forward, 2027 Silverado and Sierra owners will need to adapt. Drivers will have to depend on the redesigned front center console, stick to the standard gloveboxes, or purchase lockable aftermarket bed boxes to keep their valuables out of sight.

Range is all the Rage These Days

GM is making the right call for its core truck buyers. Customers who spend extra money on the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel care more about uninterrupted highway range and towing convenience than saving a few cubic inches of cab storage. The ability to pull heavy trailers for much longer distances without frantically hunting down a truck stop DEF pump is a massive win for both fleet operators and private owners.

While giving up the rear under-seat storage is definitely frustrating for everyday family utility, the extra fluid capacity ultimately makes the Silverado and Sierra much better workhorses. When weighed against the massive towing and range improvements arriving for the next production cycle, losing a couple of plastic storage bins is a perfectly acceptable trade-off for serious truck owners.
