The Mercedes-AMG GT R will debut at Goodwood with 570 hp

We knew it was coming, and now we can tell you precisely when. Thanks to a premature announcement about Michelin’s Goodwood Festival of Speed activities, we know that’s where the long-awaited AMG GT R will make its public debut.

It appears Michelin jumped the gun in announcing the debuts in this year’s FoS Supercar Paddock, because the press release outlining them is now gone, replaced by one that says “details of product debuts and special appearances will be confirmed in future announcements.” Oh well. There’s no undo button on the Internet. To be sure we weren’t just having visions, we confirmed with Mercedes that the car will in fact be at Goodwood. The Festival of Speed takes place this year from June 23 through 26.

We have the when and where, but also a line on one of the hows, as in “how much power will this
uber AMG make?” The now-disappeared Michelin release stated a horsepower rating of 570, which is 67 hp more than in the AMG GT S. We asked, but Mercedes would neither confirm nor deny that number. The R is expected to use use a version of the GT and GT S’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 tuned way up.

As for what it looks like, Michelin did not do us the solid of leaking an image, so we still just have the
loads of
spy shots (including some with a
very fake kidney grille) and
spy video to go off. Bigger front air intakes and a huge rear wing are a given at this point, and you can also bet on different wheels and some extra carbon-fiber pieces like an elaborate rear diffuser that wraps around he unique center-exit exhaust. And this being the hardest-core GT, it should include a more track-oriented suspension tune, bigger brakes, and possibly some weight reduction. Although that rear wing will add a few pounds.

The only other detail we were able to get from a Mercedes spokesman is that the car is expected to go on sale in the US by next summer, which likely makes it a 2018 model here. Expect a base price well north of the GT S’s $130,825 sticker.
