General Motors expands pickup and SUV recall by 553,000 units

General Motors announced Friday that it is expanding an earlier recall to include another 553,000 units. The action, which affects 1999-2002 model year sport-utilities and full-size pickups centers on potentially faulty anti-lock brake systems, which may unintentionally activate at low speeds. Owners of certain Chevrolet Silverados, Tahoes, Suburbans and Avalanches are among those who might find notices in their mailboxes. Not to be left out, GMC’s doppelgangers, the Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL are also recall targets.

The initial recall this past August covered some 804,000 examples in 14 U.S. states. Friday’s
announcement adding Delaware, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Washington D.C. to the mix increases
the total to 21 states.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is continuing its investigation
of 1.2 million of the General’s SUVs and pickups, which began last April.
