We’re near the end of April, and the ads for everything from Chevrolet’s subcompact Trax to the Silverado are everywhere. It’s Chevy’s Bonus Tag days, and on select in-stock models it provides a full 16-percent discount from the factory’s MSRP.

Careful observers of industry incentives will know that big discounts on big trucks are nothing new. But obtaining a similar savings on your Traverse, Equinox (’17 model), or Malibu purchase typically takes an end-of-the-year push or a visit to the dealer’s pre-owned department. And if you assume a dealer has at most roughly 10 percent to work with in arriving at a competitively negotiated price, then 16 percent looks like a very substantive move in the consumer direction.

Obviously, the bigger-ticket car or truck supplies the bigger discount. On Chevy’s website in late April the lead example is a Silverado All Star LT 4WD, with an MSRP of $49,452. This is a comfortably equipped pickup, but well short of the hard-loaded examples populating many truck reviews. With almost $5,000 of what Chevy’s website terms ‘purchase cash’, along with just over $3,000 of ‘factory reduction’, the out-the-door (exclusive of transportation, taxes and registration) is just $41,615.

Chevrolet’s about-to-be-replaced ’17 Equinox also constitutes serious bang for the buck. With the referenced Equinox LT FWD enjoying a window of just under $30,000, Chevy will provide $3,449 in purchase cash and $1,348 in factory reduction for a sales price of $25,193.

While there are other models available – select models, select dealers – the most attractive (at least subjectively) is Chevrolet’s newish Malibu. Rarely has such curvaceous sheetmetal been applied to a midsize, accessible sedan. In nicely equipped LT trim the Malibu example has a $26,820 MSRP. Less all offers on – again – selected models, you walk out the door paying $22,530 plus destination, taxes, and registration.

As you knew before reading it, there’s fine print. But any way you do the math, this is credible savings on a viable lineup of cars, crossovers and trucks.
