Caterham, makers of the Caterham 7, have decided to enter the Shell Fuel Economy Challenge.
This represents the first road-legal four-wheel car to enter the Challenge in some time. The Caterham 2R (two ‘R’ for
record-breaking and research) has modified body work for better aerodynamics, light weight seating, and
low-rolling resistance tires. The Caterham may also be driven to the competition, not on a trailer, to prove that this
is a street-legal machine. In a normal Caterham, the 1.6-liter four produces 115bhp and accelerates the car from 0-60
in 6.2 seconds. No major modifications to the 2R should affect power, so the competition car should be just as quick.
While it certainly will not top the 11,195mpg record of the Fancy Carol team in 2004, it is an interesting
exercise. Most people probably would not think such a performance oriented vehicle could be fuel
efficient.
