Summer is here, melting ice cream, pavement, and, on truly scorching days, the minds of people forced to endure the heat without a proper air conditioner. Make sure you don’t end up as one of those people without a portable air conditioner, an easy-to-install and effective appliance for soundly beating the heat no matter how hot or humid it gets. Walmart has a solid model on sale with a big discount, so there’s really no excuse not to have a comfortable summer from here on out.
The Ktaxon 8,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner is on sale for $166 at Walmart, 45% off its normal $300 price tag. It’s one of five different versions of the air conditioner, each with a different BTU output, but only one is still in stock. If you have a very large space, the 18,000-BTU model that’s on sale for $240 is probably a better pick, but for garages, basements, bedrooms, offices, and even repurposed sheds, 8,000 BTU is plenty.
The design here is fairly standard for the product category, a rolling white box with a vent on the top half of the front and a connection in the back for a flexible hose that sits under an opened window sash. It comes with a hose, window seal plate, remote control, screws, and batteries — everything you need to start using it out of the box. We’re particular fans of the remote, which has a screen that displays the current temperature and settings so you don’t have to go across the room to find it before adjusting. It makes just 53 dB of noise and can circulate up to 163 cubic feet of air per minute. This A/C also has fan and dehumidifier functions and is recommended for spaces of up to 200 square feet.
“We have been using this portable air conditioner for over a month now and absolutely love it,” one shopper wrote. “It does a great job cooling the room, comes with a nice remote control, is quiet (especially on low), moves easily on wheels, and has a stretchable hose.” ”
Another customer called this air conditioner “excellent for a small space,” and the fact that it functions as a fan, dehumidifier, and A/C makes it “the real deal.” A third fan of this unit called it “a lifesaver” that’s replaced a complicated setup that included a window A/C unit and multiple fans and works way better.
