Overview
The 2025 Volvo V90 Cross Country premium crossover station wagon is one of the few in a class that also includes the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain wagons. The 2025 V90 Cross Country comes in one configuration, with a twin-charged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine coupled to a 48V mild-hybrid system to produce 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It’s linked to an 8-speed auto and all-wheel drive.
Now in its 9th year since its last redesign, the V90 Cross Country is in its penultimate model year with only a few minor updates. It’s particularly suited to people who want a practical and car-like alternative to an SUV, with Scandinavian design and wagon versatility.
What’s New for 2025?
There are still only two trims in the range, but the Ultimate trim is renamed Ultra. The only other change is that massaging front seats are no longer standard on the top trim, but it’s still available as a standalone option. There are no other changes, and the mechanical package stays the same, while a Polestar Engineered Optimization software upgrade remains available.
The 2025 Volvo V90 Cross Country’s price starts at just under $60K.
Exterior
The V90 Cross Country may be old, but it still looks timelessly svelte, with clean Scandinavian surfacing making it stand out in an SUV-dominated market. At over 195 inches long, it’s longer than most midsize SUVs. Some ruggedness is added to the elegant profile in the form of aluminum roof rails, black lower-body cladding, and a subtly raised suspension system with nearly eight inches of ground clearance.
Curve-adaptive LED headlights with Thor’s Hammer DRLs, 19-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, a panoramic roof, and a power liftgate. The Ultra runs on 20-inch wheels.

Interior
Swedish style and design are also evident in the cabin, where you’ll find leather upholstery (Nappa leather in the Ultra), real wood, and soft-feel plastics. Standard features include heated power front seats, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and 4-zone climate control. The Ultra adds ventilated front seats, rear sunshades, and an Orrefors crystal gear shifter.
The in-car tech comprises a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen with Google Built-In. System features include Google Maps, a voice assistant, Spotify, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a 10-speaker audio system. The Ultra has 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio, upgradable to a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system.
Optional adaptive damping with self-leveling rear air suspension improves the ride and cargo-carrying capacity. The cargo hold accommodates 19.5 cu-ft of stuff, increasing to 69 cu-ft with the rear seat folded.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- The raised wagon format delivers up to 69 cu-ft of cargo with a lower load floor than an SUV, making it easier to load and more aerodynamic for better highway fuel economy
- Front seats among the most comfortable in the industry, with available Nappa leather, ventilation, and massage, supported by a cabin built with genuinely premium materials
- Comprehensive standard safety with forward collision, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise, lane centering, 360-degree camera, and parking sensors on every trim
Cons:
- The platform dates back to 2017, and while the interior remains attractive, the infotainment touchscreen and overall tech feel a step behind newer competitors
- Only one powertrain is offered, with no plug-in hybrid or performance option, limiting the appeal for buyers wanting more power or EV capability
- Premium fuel is required, and at 25 MPG combined, the V90 Cross Country is not significantly more efficient than comparable luxury SUVs
Verdict
The Volvo V90 Cross Country has been staging a quiet rebellion against the SUV brigade, with decent ground clearance, all-weather traction, and elegant Swedish looks in a car-like wagon package that looks and handles better than almost any SUV. But the platform is aging, the infotainment system is lagging behind, and the car will admit defeat and bow out soon, with last year planned as its last model year. It remains appealing while it lasts, and is a reminder of a time when all Americans thought wagons were cool.
