Overview

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ is the electric luxury G-Class SUV variant, powered by four individually controlled electric motors that deliver a combined 579 hp and 859 lb-ft of torque. A 116-kWh battery provides an EPA-estimated 239 miles of range. The four-motor setup enables G-Turn, which rotates the SUV in place on loose surfaces, and G Steering, which pivots the vehicle around the inside rear wheel to reduce turning radius.

It retains a ladder-frame chassis, three locking differentials, and true off-road capability. Despite weighing 6,746 lbs, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. This SUV suits buyers who want the G-Class experience with zero emissions and features that no gas-powered G-Class offers.

What’s New for 2026?

The 2026 G 580 EQ expands its personalization options following the Edition One launch. Three new Night Package variants introduce sportier styling elements, including tinted indicator lights and black aerodynamic wheels. A new Manufaktur Dark Chrome Package adds a more expressive exterior finish. The model also introduces a broader range of paint finishes, adding Exclusive Manufaktur Cardinal Red Magno (below left, seen on an AMG G 63), along with additional interior upholstery and trim choices, such as seatbelts in yellow, red, or silver (below right).

Exterior

The G 580 EQ keeps the familiar boxy shape, exposed door hinges, round LED headlights, and rear-mounted spare tire. A sealed front grille, distinct wheels, and G 580 badging set it apart from gas versions. It measures 182.0 inches in length with a 113.8-inch wheelbase and stands 78.2 inches tall. Ground clearance sits at 9.8 inches, with approach, breakover, and departure angles of 32, 20.3, and 30.7 degrees. Water fording depth reaches 33.5 inches, which is 5.9 inches more than the gas G-Class, thanks to a sealed battery and a carbon-reinforced underbody panel.

Interior

The G 580 EQ features a cabin with dual 12.3-inch displays running NTG 7 MBUX, along with natural-language voice control. A Burmester 3D Surround Sound system with Dolby Atmos comes standard. An off-road display provides real-time data such as steering angle, tilt, grade, torque, and compass direction. The Transparent Hood function shows terrain directly ahead and beneath the vehicle. Nappa leather, heated and ventilated front seats, and the signature passenger grab handle come standard. Rear legroom measures 39.5 inches. Cargo space offers 34.8 cu-ft behind the rear seats and 70.3 cu-ft with the seats folded.

Price Range

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ’s price positions it at the top of the G-Class lineup.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Four individual motors enable G-TURN (rotate in place) and G Steering capabilities
  • 859 lb-ft of instant torque from zero rpm transforms off-road crawling
  • 33.5-inch water fording depth exceeds the gas G-Class by nearly 6 inches
  • Sealed battery with carbon-reinforced underbody panel protects against trail damage
  • Retains iconic G-Class design, ladder frame, and three locking differentials

Cons:

  • 239-mile EPA range is limited for a $163,200 vehicle
  • 6,746-lb curb weight is nearly 1,000 lbs heavier than the AMG G 63
  • 34.8 cu-ft of cargo space is modest (less than a Honda CR-V)
  • 62 MPGe combined efficiency is low for an EV due to the brick-like aerodynamics
  • G-TURN and G Steering are restricted to loose or low-friction surfaces only

Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ electric SUV shows that electrification can enhance an icon without changing its core character. The four-motor system delivers individually controlled torque at each wheel with millisecond precision. Three Crawl modes, including 1, 5, and variable speeds up to 9 mph, allow the SUV to navigate technical terrain with a composure that the gas version cannot match. G-Turn proves useful in tight trail scenarios and adds a unique capability elsewhere.

On the road, it delivers a refined ride for a ladder-frame vehicle. The 859 lb-ft of torque moves the nearly 6,800-lb SUV to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, but the defining trait is silence. The traditional V8 noise disappears, and the cabin feels noticeably more serene.

The 239-mile range remains the main compromise. Rivals such as the Rivian R1S provide more range at a lower price point. For buyers committed to the G-Class identity who want zero emissions and capabilities that go beyond any gas-powered version, the G 580 delivers a distinct experience that aligns with its price and purpose.
