Overview

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan is a full-size electric luxury sedan in the mold of the BMW i7 and Lucid Air, and it’s aimed squarely at the luxury market, so it’s not as sporty as a Porsche Taycan or Audi e-tron GT. It hasn’t always been plain sailing, and the car’s amorphous styling has been criticized, but Mercedes has refined it in recent years, and this year sees a revitalized electrical architecture and more power. There are 450+, 500 4Matic, and 580 4Matic trims with 402, 469, and 576 hp, respectively. The AMG models are reviewed separately.

What’s New for 2027

The 2027 EQS Sedan gets a mild exterior and interior refresh, with a reshaped hood, redesigned 3-pointed-star headlights, restyled taillights, improved aero, and new wheel designs. Both the grille and the hood ornament can now be illuminated at an extra cost (below left). The backlit grille is included in the AMG Line package.

Inside, there are new upholstery and trim choices, a restyled steering wheel, optionally heated front seatbelts, an improved MB.OS infotainment system with AI integration and a more advanced personal assistant, and more rear-seat entertainment options.

The car gets an all-new 800-volt electrical architecture, new electric motors designed by Mercedes, and a larger 122-kWh battery with optimized chemistry that is more energy-dense. The 450+’s power output rises from 355 to 402 hp, the 450 4Matic becomes the 500 4Matic, with a power increase from 402 to 469 hp, and the 580 4Matic increases from 536 to 576 hp.

DC charging capability is upped dramatically to 350 kW, the regenerative braking is stronger, and the range is longer. A steer-by-wire system claimed to improve agility is now available, and the air suspension is now cloud-connected, while the advanced driver-assistance systems are expanded.

Exterior

The EQS’ globular shape isn’t universally liked, but Mercedes brought back the classic 3-bar grille motif for MY2025, and this year, there are more refinements, including restyled headlights with Mercedes stars in them and new LED taillights. Both the grille and hood ornament can be illuminated, and a grille with illuminated stars in it is part of the AMG Line package. The wheels are 20 inches in size, with a few new designs being added this year; they can be upgraded to 21 or 22 inches. Rear-axle steering is fitted, along with air suspension. The cargo area is accessed by a power liftback, not a trunk lid.

Interior

The MBUX cabin tech runs MB.OS with a zero-layer menu concept and incorporates a full-width Hyperscreen comprising a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 17.7-inch center touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger display. Six 100W USB ports, HD Radio, SiriusXM, a virtual assistant, navigation, front and rear wireless charging pads, and a 15-speaker Burmester audio system are standard; a head-up display and rear-seat entertainment system with dual 13.1-inch displays are optional.

The cabin is luxurious and comes with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated power front seats, heated outboard rear seats, soft-close doors, a panoramic roof, 64-color adjustable ambient lighting, and dual-zone climate control. Options include heated front seatbelts, 4-zone climate control, massaging front seats, ventilated rear seats, and an air-fragrance system. The rear seat is roomy, with 40.4 inches of legroom and 38 inches of headroom.

Price Range and Best Value Trim

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan’s price increases slightly at the base 450 level, but the 580 trim’s price stays the same.

Trim LevelPrice
EQS 450+$101,450
EQS 450 4Matic$104,450
EQS 580 4Matic$123,900

The base EQS 450+ is the best value because you get the whole EQS experience and the 122-kWh battery at a lower price point. The 402-hp output will prove sufficient for most people, and its range is the longest in the lineup, expected to be around 425 miles.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Exceptionally quiet and comfortable
  • Expected EPA range of well over 400 miles  in EQS 450+ form
  • Cabin is rich and futuristic
  • Standard air suspension
  • Standard rear-axle steering

Cons:

  • Not very engaging to drive
  • Divisive styling
  • Snug rear seat
  • Touchscreen-heavy controls distracting

Verdict

The EQS Sedan is a worthy Mercedes flagship if you don’t mind its somewhat divisive styling and $100K-plus price tag. The base 450+ trim provides the full experience and adequate performance at the base price, and goes farthest on a charge. It’s a luxury cruiser and not a sports sedan, and that’s just fine by us, considering that was always the S-Class’ main talent.
