Overview

The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is an electric high-performance luxury sedan now, replacing its predecessor’s twin-turbo V8 with a purpose-built electric powertrain based on the new AMG.EA architecture. Both models use three axial-flux motors and come with AWD, delivering 805 horsepower in the GT 55, which will arrive in 2026, and 1,153 hp in the GT 63, which will arrive early in 2027. The GT 63 blasts to 60 mph in just 2.0 seconds when optioned with the AMG Performance package. The car is made for people who want supercar acceleration in an electric 4-door package, with no compromise on technology or luxury.

What’s New for 2027

The 2027 GT 4-Door Coupe is all-new and breaks from its V8 gas forebear by going all-electric. Its dedicated AMG EA platform incorporates F1 technology, an 800-volt electrical architecture, a 106-kWh battery, a peak charging capability of 600 kW, and three axial-flux electric motors driving all four wheels. It comes with active Aerokinetics aerodynamics, AMG Active Ride Control suspension, and the new AMG Race Engineer control unit. A prototype car already has 25 long-distance speed records under its belt at Italy’s Nardò Ring, covering nearly 25,000 miles in just more than seven days.

Exterior

The new GT 4-Door’s polarizing styling has not been universally accepted, and its projecting maw and linked headlights have drawn criticism – and comparison to cheaper Merc EVs like the new CLA EV. Nevertheless, the proportions are purposeful, with a long hood, an AMG-specific grille with vertical slats (optionally illuminated for the first time on a Mercedes), and a wide, planted stance. The massive black mask with the six gunbarrel taillights at the rear is controversial but very aggressive. Available active Aerokinetics tech includes deployable underbody venturi plates and an active rear diffuser.

Interior

Mercedes-Benz’s new MB.OS operating system with a Zero Layer interface drives the 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, 14-inch touchscreen, and standard 14-inch passenger display. All the expected tech features are included, and a high-end Burmester 4D audio system is available. The AMG Performance seats feature aggressive bolstering to hold occupants, and the driver gets a flat-bottomed AMG Performance steering wheel. A Sky Control panoramic glass roof is available and features switchable transparency. Extensive Manufaktur trim and color options are offered. The AMGForce S+ driving mode activates simulated V8 sounds.

Efficiency (MPGe)

EPA efficiency figures weren’t available at the time of writing. The claimed European WLTP combined range figure maxes out at 430-440 miles, but we expect this figure to drop by around 20% when tested by the EPA.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Hypercar-rivaling 2.0-second 0-60 mph time (GT 63 w/ Performance package)
  • 800-volt architecture with up to 600-kW DC fast-charging
  • Genuine 4-door practicality with AMG track-tuned performance
  • Three axial-flux motors enable precise torque vectoring
  • Active aerodynamics and rear-axle steering

Cons:

  • U.S. pricing, range, and warranty not yet officially confirmed
  • Expected pricing significantly higher than outgoing V8 model
  • AMG’s first ground-up EV: long-term reliability unproven
  • Polarizing styling will not appeal to traditionalists
  • AMGForce S+ simulated V8 audio may feel artificial to purists

Verdict

The new AMG GT 4-Door is AMG’s most dramatic electric reinvention yet, and a complete rethink of what a high-performance electric sedan can be when freed from the constraints of combustion power. The headline figures of 1,153 hp from the GT 63 and the 2.0-second sprint to 60 MPH put this sedan squarely in hypercar territory, while maintaining 4-door practicality. The 800V architecture, the three axial-flux motors, and hugely impressive maximum 600-kW charging ability all point to a new breed of electric AMG with genuinely forward-thinking tech.

The expected price that is likely to exceed $200K at the top end is very high, but a Lucid Air Sapphire and Taycan Turbo GT are a quarter of a million dollars, so it’s right in the ballpark. If you can get over the controversial looks, this ballistic electric 4-door is a serious contender that is certainly worth waiting for.
