Overview

The 2026 Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 is a subcompact luxury performance SUV that sits at the sharp end of the Mercedes GLA range. It uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, producing 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Power runs through an 8-speed AMG SpeedShift DCT dual-clutch transmission and standard AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel drive. Acceleration to 60 mph takes just 5.1 seconds.

It shares the MFA2 platform with the CLA sedan and GLB subcompact 3-row crossover, blending compact SUV practicality with proper AMG hardware. Standard equipment includes AMG Ride Control adaptive suspension, an AMG-specific braking system, and sport-tuned electric power steering. This setup suits buyers who want entry-level AMG performance in a smaller footprint with added ride height and usable cargo space.

What’s New for 2026?

The 2026 GLA 35 AMG lineup gains a new AMG Design Plus package (below), which adds more aggressive styling elements, including Manufaktur Alpine Grey paint, the AMG Night Package Plus, a high-gloss black spoiler lip, aerodynamically optimized 19-inch AMG wheels, and red AMG brake calipers.

The AMG GLA 45 exits the U.S. market, leaving the GLA 35 as the only AMG variant.

Exterior

The AMG GLA 35 stands apart from the GLA 250 with a Panamericana-style AMG grille, a more aggressive front bumper with larger air intakes, side sill extensions, and a rear diffuser with twin round exhaust outlets. Standard 19-inch AMG alloy wheels can be upgraded to 20-inch or 21-inch sizes, though larger wheels reduce ride comfort.

Interior

Inside, the GLA 35 AMG uses a pair of 10.25-inch displays for the digital instrument cluster and MBUX touchscreen, both integrated into the dashboard. AMG-specific graphics show performance data such as g-force readings, turbo boost, and lap timing.

Standard features include AMG sport seats trimmed in leatherette and sueded microfiber, a flat-bottom AMG Performance steering wheel with shift paddles, dual-zone climate control, and ambient lighting. The Exclusive package adds a panoramic sunroof and wireless charging. The Pinnacle package includes a head-up display, Burmester audio system, and MBUX Augmented Video navigation. Heated front seats cost $500.

The rear legroom is 38.0 inches, which is competitive for the segment, while cargo capacity measures 15.4 cu-ft behind the rear seats and expands to 50.5 cu-ft when folded.

Price Range and Best Value Trim

The 2026 Mercedes-AMG GLA 35’s price starts at $58,550, placing it well above the rest of the GLA range, which starts at $41,500.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • 302 hp and 5.1-second 0-60 are strong performance in a compact SUV
  • Standard AMG 4Matic AWD improves traction in varied conditions
  • Dual 10.25-inch MBUX displays add a premium tech feel
  • 8-speed AMG SpeedShift DCT shifts quickly and cleanly
  • Compact size helps in city driving and parking

Cons:

  • Starting price approaches larger AMG models
  • Heated front seats cost extra
  • Ride comfort drops with 20-inch or 21-inch wheels
  • Cargo space trails several competitors
  • AMG GLA 45 no longer sells in the U.S.

Verdict

The Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 subcompact luxury SUV occupies a unique spot in the lineup. It delivers real AMG performance with 302 hp, quick acceleration, and standard all-wheel drive, all in the smallest SUV it offers in the U.S. market. For buyers who want performance in a compact package, it stands as a credible alternative to rivals like the BMW X1 M35i and Audi SQ3.

It responds well to enthusiastic inputs; the turbocharged engine pulls strongly through the mid-range, while the dual-clutch transmission delivers quick shifts in Sport and Sport+ modes. AMG Ride Control keeps body motion in check, and selectable drive modes adjust throttle response, transmission behavior, suspension settings, and exhaust tone. It behaves more like a tall hot hatch than a traditional crossover.

Price remains the main consideration. At $58,550 before options, it sits more than $17,000 above the base GLA 250. Many buyers at this level will also consider the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, which offers a 416-hp 4-cylinder, more interior space, and a more refined experience for roughly $10,000 more. Within its own lineup, the GLA 250 delivers much of the driving enjoyment at a lower cost.

For buyers specifically looking for a GLA 35 AMG, however, the combination of compact size, AMG hardware, and everyday usability makes it a focused and distinctive choice.
