Overview
The 2026 BMW X6 M Competition is a high-performance SUV coupe that pairs a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 with 48-volt mild hybrid technology to produce 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed M Steptronic and rear-biased M xDrive all-wheel drive send it to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. As the coupe-roof version of the X5 M, it sacrifices some practicality for a more dramatic shape and does without a tow hitch. Built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, it rivals the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe, Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, and Aston Martin DBX707.
What’s New for 2026?
Changes for 2026 remain modest. The 2026 X6 M Competition receives sharper LED lighting signatures, small grille updates, and updated iDrive software with quicker response times. Throttle calibration is revised for slightly sharper response. The 48-volt mild hybrid system introduced last year continues unchanged. Gesture control for the infotainment system is discontinued. The X6 M continues exclusively in Competition trim.
Exterior
The BMW X6 M Competition coupe-styled performance SUV stands out with a sweeping roofline that runs from a long hood into a tapered rear. M-specific design elements include a blacked-out kidney grille, aggressive bumpers with enlarged air intakes, and quad exhaust outlets. Standard 21-inch bi-color M wheels fill the widened fenders, while 21 and 22-inch staggered wheel sets are optional. The M Carbon exterior package adds carbon fiber trim to the mirror caps, rear spoiler, and diffuser. Adaptive LED headlights with optional laser light technology improve forward visibility. The body measures 194.8 inches long, 79.5 inches wide, and 66.7 inches tall.

An M Sport steering wheel with shift paddles and M Drive buttons places performance settings directly within reach. The M Drive Professional system includes launch control and a drift analyzer. A Bowers and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system and a head-up display can be added. Cargo space measures 27.4 cubic feet and expands to 59.6 cubic feet with the 40/20/40 split rear bench folded.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- 617-hp twin-turbo V8 delivers 3.7-second 0-60 launches
- Rear-biased M xDrive provides engaging, adjustable handling
- Dramatic coupe roofline sets it apart from the X5 M
- Merino leather and M performance suite standard
Cons:
- 13 mpg city makes daily fuel costs significant
- Coupe roofline reduces rear headroom compared to X5 M
- Starting price above $134,000 before options
- Cargo space trails the X5 M by a meaningful margin
- Ride quality can be harsh over rough pavement in Sport mode
Verdict
The X6 M Competition targets buyers who want X5 M performance in a more expressive, coupe-shaped body. Its 617-hp twin-turbo V8 and rear-biased M xDrive system deliver acceleration and handling that feel far removed from the vehicle’s size, while 59.6 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity keeps it reasonably practical.
At $134,600, the X6 M comes well equipped. The Competition trim is the only configuration, and many buyers will likely choose the Executive Package and possibly carbon ceramic brakes. The sloping roofline reduces rear headroom compared to the X5 M, but it gives the vehicle a more distinctive look.
For drivers who want their performance SUV to make a visual statement while still delivering serious speed and capability, this BMW does both without compromising its core performance mission.
