Overview
The 2025 BMW X4 M is a compact high-performance luxury coupe SUV based on the third (G01) generation of the X3, specifically the X3 M, and it’s now in its final model year, following the redesign of its X3 donor car. It’s not clear whether there will be a new X4 generation or a new X4 M. The 2025 X4 M swansong still comes with the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter S58 inline 6-cylinder engine with 473 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque, but the Competition package increases these numbers to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft.
Power is transmitted via an 8-speed automatic transmission to BMW’s xDrive AWD system, enabling the standard X4 M to sprint to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds; the Competition takes just 3.7 seconds. The X4 M is made for people who want X3 M performance in a more stylish, coupe SUV body.
What’s New for 2025?
The car carries over unchanged into its last model year, with no changes to its standard features, specifications, and powertrain. The 2025 BMW X4 M’s price is $79,100.
Exterior
Although it’s an X3 M underneath, the X4 M distinguishes itself from its boxier sibling with a dramatically receding roofline and fastback profile. It gets its own set of aggressive bumpers with big air intakes, as well as quad exhausts and a rear diffuser. Standard 20-inch M alloy wheels are wrapped in performance rubber. The Competition package not only adds more power, but also an M Sport exhaust and dark exterior trim.
LED headlights and DRLs, a power liftgate, and a panoramic moonroof are all standard. Its length of 187.5 inches exceeds that of the X3 M by 1.5 inches, and it’s 1.9 inches lower at 63.8 inches. Both sit on the same 112.8-inch wheelbase.

Interior
Both the digital gauge cluster and center touchscreen measure 12.3 inches, and tech features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Sirius XM, navigation, Wi-Fi, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
Vernasca leather upholstery, heated power front seats, a leather-trimmed M Sport steering wheel, carbon-fiber trim, and 3-zone climate control are standard. The Competition package adds M Sport seats, and the Executive package adds a head-up display.
The X4 M takes a big hit in cargo capacity, which is down from the X3 M’s. With the rear seats in place, it has only 18.5 cu-ft (as opposed to 28.7 cu-ft), and with the rear seats folded, there is 50.5 cu-ft, down from 62.7 cu-ft. The 35.5 inches of legroom and 37.2 inches of headroom in the rear row are also down on the X3 M’s figures of 36.4 inches and 38.5 inches, respectively.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- S58 engine delivers brutal acceleration, Edmunds tested 3.2 seconds to 60
- 50/50 weight distribution provides sports-sedan handling in an SUV
- 16-speaker Harman Kardon and carbon fiber trim standard
- M xDrive offers a rear-biased torque split for engaging cornering
Cons:
- Firm ride makes daily commuting harsh over rough pavement
- 17 mpg combined on premium fuel is costly
- Fastback roofline reduces cargo and rear headroom versus the X3
- Aging platform lacks the latest BMW technology from the new X3
Verdict
The BMW X4 M offers all the fury and performance of the X3 M, but in a svelte coupe-style body. The “base” car’s 473 hp is plenty strong for a sub-4-second sprint to 60 mph, and it’s preferably over the Competition with its bigger wheels and harsher ride. The S58 engine offers dramatic performance, and the M Sport hardware keeps it on the blacktop with impressive composure.
The trade-off for the coupe styling is clear – a far smaller trunk and less rear-seat space. If you can live with it, you can still get proper BMW M thrills in a compact luxury SUV. But you’d better hurry, because the X3 M is already gone and the X4 M bows out this year.
