Overview

The 2027 BMW i7 is an electric full-size luxury sedan and BMW’s tech flagbearer, as the electric variant of the gas 7 Series. It brims with modern tech and luxury features, and the 2027 model is comprehensively updated with new features. Both currently available 449-hp 50 xDrive and 536-hp 60 xDrive trims have a new 112.5-kWh battery, AWD, and improved performance and range figures. A spacious and luxurious interior is par for the course, but you also get all-new tech now, including dual diagonal displays, BMW’s Panoramic Vision, and a lot more besides.

What’s New for 2027

The 2027 i7 gets styling and tech borrowed from other Neue Klasse BMWs. The front is more bluff and angular, the (illuminated) kidney grilles are smaller, the BMW logo is bigger, there are strip-like DRLs and upright LED headlights, and the LED taillights reach almost all the way to the middle of the trunk lid. There’s a new side crease, redesigned door handles, and new BMW Individual two-tone finishes. BMW’s Ceremonial Light Carpet projects onto the ground with new welcome and goodbye animations.

A 17.9-inch hexagonal touchscreen appears, with a configurable cabin-width BMW Panoramic Vision display strip below the windshield, a 3D head-up display, and a standard 14.6-inch passenger display, running BMW Operating System X. A 31.1-inch 8K cinema display is available for the second row. There’s a new steering wheel with a top spoke, a redesigned center console, repositioned buttons for opening and closing the soft-close doors, Amazon Alexa+ AI tech, more computing power, and a new wiring harness weighing 30% less. A camera-based digital rearview mirror is now offered.

You get a new 112.5-kWh battery with cylindrical cells that hold 20% more energy, support 250-kW charging, and provide a range of up to 364 miles. The electric motors are more efficient, and you get a NACS port allowing Tesla Supercharger access and a range of charging adapters. The 2027 lineup currently comprises only renamed 50 xDrive and 60 xDrive (previously eDrive50 and xDrive60), with both having dual motors and AWD. There is no revamped M70 trim yet. Throttle response has been retuned to be more progressive, and there are new driving sounds.

Exterior

The exterior restyle is outlined in more detail above at What’s New; suffice to say that the i7’s styling is perhaps a tad less controversial now, but it’s still a big car with edifice-like styling that cannot be ignored. Both trims come with 20-inch two-color alloys, but various 21-inch designs are available. Individual two-tone finishes are offered. The M Sport package adds blacked-out Shadowline exterior trim and M Sport brakes with blue callipers.

Interior

We outline most of the cabin changes above at What’s New, so check that section for all the new features. Needless to say, in a car of this caliber, full leather upholstery is standard, with extended leather available. Standard features included heated power front seats, a heated steering wheel and rear seats, BMW Panoramic Vision, a 17.9-inch touchscreen, a 14.6-inch passenger display, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, in-car apps, navigation, and various driving modes.

A few of the many options include 39-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio, massaging front seats, automatic doors, and a Luxury Rear Seating package with ventilated and massaging multi-function rear seats, or the upgraded Executive Lounge rear seats with electric reclining, a footrest, and the 31.1-inch BMW Theater screen with touch control and an integrated camera. Hands-free highway driving also costs extra.

Price Range and Best Value Trim

The 2027 BMW i7’s price starts around $2K higher than last year, and the new lineup has only two trim levels at present, with no updated M70 xDrive listed yet.

Verdict

The 2027 i7 is revamped and cleans up the polarizing styling a little, while adding a new battery, a NACS port, significantly more range, and a lot more Neue Klasse tech and features. It’s not as sporty or driver-focused as a Taycan, and there’s no high-performance M70 trim yet, but it performs the luxury-sedan job superbly, with the Executive Rear Seat and BMW Theater options catering to the travelling CEO and producing a true flagship experience.
