Overview

The 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale is a subcompact luxury SUV that’s twinned with the Dodge Hornet under Stellantis. It comes with a choice of two powertrains: a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 268 horsepower/295 lb-ft and a 9-speed automatic or a 1.3-liter turbo-four PHEV with 285 hp/347 lb-ft and a 6-speed automatic. The PHEV comes with a 15.5-kWh battery, a 90-kW rear electric motor giving it eAWD, and up to 33 miles of electric range or 77 MPGe combined.

The Tonale brings some personality to a subcompact class dominated by German cars with fetching Italian styling, Alfa DNA drive modes, and even available Brembo brakes. It may prove ideal for people wanting a spirited driving experience, distinctive design, and PHEV efficiency.

What’s New for 2025?

The 2025 Tonale lineup is restructured and gains a new base gas model with a 268-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine at around $10K less than the PHEV model. This means that the 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale’s price now starts at less than $37,000.

The previous Sprint, Ti, and Veloce trims are no more, either, and have been replaced with a single core trim configuration to which you can add packages as you please, such as the $1,000 Veloce package that adds Brembo brake callipers, aluminum shift paddles, and adjustable suspension. There’s also a new limited-edition Tributo Italiano trim with dark wheels, body-color styling, leather upholstery with Italian tricolore embroidery, and a Harman Kardon audio system.

Exterior

The Tonale can’t be anything but an Alfa Romeo with its V-shaped Scudetto grille and adaptive Matrix LED Trilobe headlights. The hood is sculpted, the beltline rises toward the rear, and the wraparound taillights have a stand-out sine-curve signature. The standard alloy wheels measure 18 inches, but you can upgrade to 19 inches, while the Tributo Italiano rides on 20-inch Grigio wheels, and also comes with full exterior color-coding, red Brembo callipers, a black roof, Italian flag mirror badges, and a hands-free power liftgate.

Interior

The driver is presented with a heated 3-spoke steering wheel and a 12.3-inch digital Cannocchiale gauge cluster with three themes. The center Uconnect 5 touchscreen measures 10.25 inches and comes with GPS navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice recognition, and a 6-speaker audio system. Heated 8-way power front seats, a wireless charging pad, and adaptive cruise control are all standard.

The Veloce package adds aluminum shift paddles, and the Tributo Italiano comes with them too, in addition to driver’s seat memory, perforated leather upholstery, and a Harman Kardon audio system. The cargo hold measures 27 cu-ft, expandable to 54.7 cu-ft with the seats flat. The PHEV’s figures are 22.9 and 50.5 cu-ft, respectively.

Price Range and Best Value Trim

The $36,495 gas Tonale is the most affordable trim this year, delivering strong performance with 268 hp and AWD. Enthusiasts can add the $1,000 Veloce Package for Brembo brake callipers and dual-mode suspension.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • New $36,495 gas model makes the Tonale the most affordable Alfa Romeo, undercutting comparable BMW X1 and Audi Q3 models
  • Available Brembo four-piston brakes, dual-mode suspension, and DNA drive modes deliver genuine driving engagement rare in this segment
  • Italian design with the Scudetto grille, Trilobe headlamps, and wraparound taillights creates a visual identity that no German competitor can replicate

Cons:

  • PHEV powertrain sounds coarse when the gas engine engages, and the 6-speed transmission hunts for gears on inclines
  • Interior space is tight for the class, with cargo volume trailing the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA, especially in PHEV form at just 22.9 cu-ft
  • Reliability concerns and a limited dealer network may give pause to buyers accustomed to more established luxury brands

Verdict

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is easier to recommend now, thanks to the cheaper gas entry-level model with 268 hp and standard AWD. Its emotive styling looks like nothing else in this market segment, it drives with more verve than most, and it offers you both gas and PHEV powertrains. It’s not as spacious inside as an X1, and the PHEV powertrain lacks some refinement, but if you put character and style above ultimate utility value, the Tonale delivers it with genuine Italian flair at a competitive price.
