The 2026 Subaru Outback in a Nutshell

It started out as a quirky niche model, but it’s now one of Subaru’s popular models. The Outback came about in 1994, about two years after the introduction of the second-generation Legacy in Japan. In essence, it was a Legacy wagon in stilts with butched-up styling thanks to a good deal of body cladding.

We saw was because Subaru changed the formula for the seventh-generation model. With the Legacy gone, there is no wagon counterpart for which an all-new Outback can be based. That means the latest one shares more in common with the Ascent, fully embracing its crossover-ness for better or worse.

Six trim levels are there to choose from for the 2026 Outback. There are also two engine choices, and prices range from $34,995 to $47,995.

2026 Subaru Outback Lease Deals for November

This month, it’s the entry-level Premium trim that’s available with a special leasing rate on Subaru’s official website. It’s a 36-month lease at $365 per month with $4,364 due at signing. Mileage is restricted to 10,000 miles per year, and it’s $0.15 per mile over that. Offer is valid until December 1, 2025.

Interestingly, there is also a lease deal for the 2025 model — you know, the one that still looks like a wagon. The 2025 Outback Base goes for $275 per month for 36 months with $4,274 due at signing. It’s a sweet deal, especially if you prefer the wagon-like shape. Terms and conditions are the same as the 2026 model.

2026 Subaru Outback Highlights

Starting with the Premium trim, it comes equipped with EyeSight advanced driver assists, a 12-inch infotainment screen, MySubaru connected services, power tailgate, heated front seats and exterior mirrors, and those meaty roof rails. One up from that is the Limited that adds leather seats, heating for the steering wheel and rear seats, and a Harman/Kardon sound system, among other things. Then there’s the Touring with Nappa leather, ventilated front seats, and more.

Go for the Wilderness, and it gains a 2.5-liter turbo mill, plus more ground clearance (from 8.7 inches to 9.5 inches), electronically-controlled dampers, and 17-inch alloys wrapped in all-terrain tires. The Limited XT and Touring XT get the same equipment levels as the standard Limited and Touring, but get bigger wheels and the turbocharged boxer engine, hence XT.

Final Thoughts

The Outback is no longer the Legacy-derived wagon on tall tires we’ve known for over 30 years. But for it to survive and remain relevant, it’s understandable why Subaru chose to turn it into a fully-fledged crossover. But like it or not, the all-new model does bring with it a host of improvements, namely, even more space and new tech. Before you dismiss it as a two-row Ascent with boxy styling, we say reserve your judgment and give it a shot first.
