Premium subcompact luxury evolves

The Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe are two of the most popular subcompact luxury sedans. BMW significantly redesigned its 2 Series Gran Coupe inside and out last year, so the 2026 model year is mostly a carryover, except for one change. The 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe now offers a front-wheel drive (FWD) 228 Gran Coupe trim as the model’s base offering. Last year, the entry-level 228 was only available in all-wheel drive (xDrive).

In contrast, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 is bringing major updates, including, but not limited to, a new platform, an all-new hybrid powertrain, and redesigned front/rear-end styling. While Mercedes-Benz is debuting an all-electric powertrain for the CLA’s 2026 model year, we’ll be focusing our comparison on the two competitors’ mild hybrid versions, as BMW isn’t releasing a 2 Series Gran Coupe battery electric vehicle. Below are five notable differences between the two competitors, enabling you to make a more informed buying decision.

1. BMW’s 228 offers the power play

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 features a rear-wheel drive (RWD) base trim, unlike its BMW counterpart’s FWD entry-level variant. Both the CLA 250 and 2 Series Gran Coupe feature mild hybrid powertrains using a 48-volt system, but the BMW offers more power. A 2026 BMW 228 produces 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft via a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In comparison, Mercedes-Benz’s CLA 250 provides 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque through a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. These powertrain specs translate to the 2026 BMW 228 Gran Coupe clocking 6.1-second and 5.8-second 0-60 mph times for its FWD and all-wheel drive (AWD) trims, respectively, whereas the 2026 CLA 250’s 0-60 mph time is consistent between all trims at 6.3 seconds. The EPA hasn’t yet released fuel economy information for these sedans.

2. The CLA 250’s exterior is more fluid than athletic

Those seeking a larger exterior within this class can consider the CLA 250. The 2026 CLA 250’s exterior measurements include a 107.4-inch wheelbase, 184.6-inch overall length, 56.7-inch overall height, and 72-inch overall width without mirrors. A 2026 BMW 228 has a 105.1-inch wheelbase, 179.2-inch length, 56.9-inch height, and 70.9-inch width without mirrors. The new CLA 250’s exterior emphasizes refined luxury and aerodynamic shape, whereas the 2 Series’ angular and upright exterior, complemented by more aggressive lines, evokes a greater sense of sportiness. While the 2 Series’ front grille is a more futuristic take on its traditional kidney grille design, it’s less polarizing than the upright kidney grille.

3. The CLA 250’s cabin feels like the future

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA’s interior leans heavily into futuristic elegance, with touches like brushed aluminum detailing, soft, padded upholstery, and a cockpit feel reminiscent of a spaceship. This redesigned CLA 250’s seats are described as comfort seats, and they’re available in black, ivory/beige, or brown. The 2026 BMW 228 Gran Coupe’s interior is more straightforward and driver-focused, characterized by elements such as reduced digital display presence. Both the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 and the 2026 BMW 228i Gran Coupe feature synthetic leather upholstery in their interiors.

4. You’ll receive more passenger room within a CLA 250

In addition to a 12 cu ft cargo capacity, the 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has 41.8 inches of front legroom, 32.2 inches of rear legroom, 55.9 inches of front shoulder room, and 51.7 inches of rear shoulder room. The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 offers a cargo capacity of 11.6 cu ft, 41.8 inches of front legroom, 33.9 inches of rear legroom, 55.1 inches of front shoulder room, and 54 inches of rear shoulder room. While the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a slightly larger cargo capacity, those who prefer more passenger room can opt for the CLA 250 without sacrificing too much trunk storage.

5. The BMW 228 doesn’t go all-in on digital displays

Large, dual digital displays, including a 14-inch central infotainment screen and a 10.3-inch digital driver’s screen, dominate the 2025 CLA 250’s interior. Mercedes-Benz also offers an optional 14-inch passenger display. The 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe matches the CLA 250’s digital driver display size but offers a smaller central infotainment screen, measuring 10.7 inches. Although the 2026 BMW 228 doesn’t offer an optional passenger display and contains a smaller infotainment screen, it’s more consistent with the vehicle’s driver-centric ethos, and the 2026 CLA 250’s screen configuration could feel a bit overwhelming for those preferring tactile controls and a more straightforward atmosphere.

Final thoughts

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 and the 2026 BMW 228 Gran Coupe are enticing options for their segment, but the latter has a more attractive sticker price. A 2026 CLA 250 starts at $42,750, and its BMW competitor holds a $39,600 base MSRP. Still, if you’re prioritizing futuristic elegance over sporty drives, selecting a 2026 CLA 250 could prove a better choice for a purchase or lease. Be sure to test drive each option before making a commitment!
