Performance sedans take off
The Subaru WRX is a legend among its segment, with standard AWD and thrilling performance that almost puts it in a league of its own – almost. For 2025, the WRX tS, short for “tuned by STI,” replaces the TR model that was introduced in 2024. The top-spec tS features a whole host of upgrades, as well as unique cosmetic changes that make it easy to pick out of a lineup. Enthusiasts need not worry, as the six-speed manual transmission returns for another year.
The Hyundai Elantra N, not to be confused with the N Line model, is the moniker’s sportiest setup, with visual changes, a six-speed manual transmission, and sport-tuned suspension. Originally introduced for the 2022 model year, the Elantra N isn’t all that old, but it still underwent a refresh for 2024. As such, Hyundai’s performance-driven compact sedan arrives unchanged for the 2025 model year.
Exterior styling spotlight
Born from the rally world, the Subaru WRX is a high-powered performance sedan that puts competitors on edge year after year. Priced from $37,750 – $47,705, the 2025 WRX is available in four trim levels. Most WRX models roll out on 18-inch wheels with front and rear underspoilers, a rear bumper with integrated diffuser, quad exhaust, and an intimidating hood scoop. At the top of the range, the WRX tS ups the ante with a handful of high-end features, including 19-inch wheels and gold brake calipers that add to the sedan’s striking appearance.

The Hyundai Elantra N builds on the standard model’s spacious interior and excellent value by adding thrilling performance and a sportier aesthetic. The performance-driven sedan boasts a black grille, diffuser, and rear wing, among other cosmetic upgrades. The sole trim level, priced from $34,350, also rides high on 19-inch wheels complemented by LED lighting and model-exclusive side sill moldings as well as front and rear fascia.
Performance sedans designed to inspire
Under the hood of every 2025 Subaru WRX lies a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission that sends power to all four wheels. That setup generates an impressive 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The WRX GT is the only model that comes stock with a CVT with an eight-speed manual mode and paddle shifters. Manual WRX models are the most efficient, earning up to 22 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Opting for the CVT reduces fuel economy by one mile per gallon across the board.

The sole Hyundai Elantra N model comes stocked with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission that sends power to the front wheels. That powertrain delivers an inspiring 276 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed wet dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters is optional. Sticking with the six-speed manual puts the Elantra N at an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Choosing the automatic transmission reduces combined fuel economy by one mile per gallon.

Interior design and features
The Subaru WRX has been a favorite among performance and rally enthusiasts alike. Available in four trim levels, the Japanese sedan rolls out with a modern interior accented by red contrast stitching and a bit of carbon fiber for good measure. Heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are standard equipment. The range-topping tS takes interior design a step further, with Recaro bucket seats, blue cabin accents, and trim-exclusive tS badging. The Subaru WRX offers up to 98.9 cu ft. of passenger space and 12.5 cu ft. of trunk space.

Most WRX models come equipped with traditional driver information gauges, but the GT and tS trims come with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster instead. An 11.6-inch touchscreen display sits nicely in the center of the dashboard of all WRX models and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The base model comes with a six-speaker audio system, while all other trim levels feature an 11-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio setup.
The Hyundai Elantra N shares many similarities with the standard Elantra sedan, including a spacious interior, with 99.4 and 14.2 cu ft. of passenger and cargo space, respectively. The interior features bolstered, leather-trimmed, and heated bucket seats, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Alloy sport pedals add to the performance-driven ambiance within the sedan’s cabin.

The Elantra N comes with all the tech a driver could ask for, the most obvious of which are two 10.25-inch displays that are home to the infotainment and driver information systems. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility come standard, as does wireless device charging. An eight-speaker Bose premium audio system also stands out, combining a pristine listening experience with exhilarating performance for under $35,000.
