The 911 G-Series
Technically speaking, the 911 G-Series was produced for just one model year in 1974. However, the nickname stuck for the entire run of the second-generation 911. Among all the generations of the venerated sports car, it’s the one that lasted the longest, from 1973 to 1989. That’s a total of a whopping 16 years, and given design cycles now, it’s something that wouldn’t happen again.
But before the 964 fully succeeded it, Porsche did something special to send off the long-running G-Series. It built a limited number of Speedster models as a nod to the original 356 version as a final-year swan song. Today, these are highly sought-after collectibles.

The Backstory
Just 2,104 G-Series Speedsters were ever made, of which only 823 were specific to the U.S. market. Its iconic status, along with its rarity, keeps its value strong, with Classic.com currently valuing it at around $229,000. That’s nearly double what widebody 3.2 Carrera coupes go for these days.
On Bring a Trailer right now is one of the 823 cars sold stateside. It’s a legit U.S model, complete with those blocky impact bumpers front and back. While not the most aesthetically pleasing part of the car, it’s bonus points for keeping it original. It was delivered to Carlsen Porsche in Palo Alto, California, and it’s had a few owners since. This particular car was previously featured on the same selling platform. We wish we could know more about its service or ownership history, but everything appears to be in order. Either way, this car has a story to tell, and whoever bought this new knew what they really wanted.

Why it’s Special
There’s the rarity, and there’s the low miles, but the 911 Speedster is more than just the low production numbers. With its unique top and rakish windshield, it’s like no other topless G-Series out there. The ‘double-bubble’ deck that houses the top gives it a one-of-a-kind shape, further differentiating it from other convertible 911s. It was a rare car then and even more so now. Sure, it’s not the most attainable classic, but it’s always a treat to see one preserved.
