Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will evolve his Luke Hobbs character in the upcoming eighth installment of the Fast and Furious films. According to Johnson, Hobbs is entering a darker, grittier phase, which might be enough to support a spin-off film featuring the character.

Johnson says his Instagram photo is an "exclusive first look" inside the Fast 8 film. He wrote on the post that he wants to disrupt the balance of the film series to leave a mark. Perhaps he wants to rival Vin Diesel as the lead character, or like Johnson says, "maybe Hobbs just gets on his motorcycle and rides off into the sunset, never to be seen again. Either way, I've had a solid first week of shooting," he adds.

In the seventh film, the Hobbs character was severely injured in a bomb blast, which didn't keep him from rejoining the action. But it's likely that left a mark on Hobbs, or as Johnson says, "when you strip a man of all he has, you force him to return to his roots – and sometimes that's a very dangerous and twisted place." Sounds like something that will involve a lot of crashed cars, mangled bikes, and pyrotechnics, with the occasional well-placed one-liner.

The much-awaited Fast 8 is currently filming, and it is set to premiere on April 14, 2017.
