Jay Leno is pretty in pink with the 1968 AMC AMX for Playboy

The AMC AMX is a largely forgotten member of the American, performance car ranks of the '60s. But with V8 power, a long hood, sloping rear and two seats inside, it's certainly nothing to ignore. This week on Jay Leno's Garage, Jay checks out a fascinating example with connections to both Playboy and the Manson murders.

This AMX's history dates back to 1968 as the prize for being the Playboy Playmate of the Year. Painted in a custom color called Playmate Pink, the special coupe paired a 290 cubic-inch (4.8-liter) V8 with an automatic transmission. The winner repainted the car to avoid drawing attention but kept it right up until 2010 when the current owner bought the AMC in poor condition. Allegedly the woman was also friends with Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate, and Polanski gave the Playmate his gun after the murders. Amazingly, the story just gets more interesting from there.

Only covering two miles since the restoration, this appearance on Jay Leno's Garage is the Playboy AMX's grand reveal. It's put back exactly to '68 specifications, including the tires. You'll definitely want to take a virtual ride with Jay in this sports coupe from the swinging '60s to hear quite a story.
