Richard Branson and Virgin hinting at a Tesla competitor

Richard Branson is trying to take people into space with Virgin Galactic, races electric cars in Formula E with Virgin Racing and owns a telecommunications empire. His next venture could see him transferring some of that tech know-how to the world of auto manufacturing, possibly even taking on Tesla.

"We have teams of people working on electric cars. So you never know-you may find Virgin competing with the Tesla in the car business as we do in the space business. We will see what happens," Branson said to Bloomberg during an interview at the Miami round of the Formula E Championship. While his statement is hardly anything official, Branson certainly has the means to enter the industry, if he desires.

Virgin Racing is already confirmed to take part in Formula E next season when the series opens up the rules a bit to let teams modify the electric motor, inverter, gearbox and cooling system. A year after that, even the batteries are fair game for changes.

Companies like Porsche maintain racing helps them improve their road cars. Maybe, Branson could use his time in Formula E to start yet another business venture.
