Another winter naturally means more videos of snowy carnage, as Mother Nature teams up with an inclined road to befuddle even those drivers who are used to such conditions. This time the location is Bountiful, Utah on January 21, where a slick bit of downhill becomes an automotive Slip-n-Slide.

The video after the jump gets off to a slow start, but about a minute or so in, things start going really wrong. By the end, we can only wonder why drivers at the top of the hill noting the demolition derby at the bottom still decide to take their chances. We also wonder why the road wasn't, oh, closed – either by police or a good samaritan. Follow the jump to see the ballet of carnage for yourself.

      It's interesting to see how judgmental and perfect everyone else is. That road is very steep. I had $700 worth of good snow tires on my van and still was sliding around. It's was more ice slush than powdery nice snow. But hey... Yeah ... We are all "insert swear word".

        Thanks for the comments thomas, including your one prior. I now live in the flat lands of California, but grew up in the midwest. The people who made such negative comments haven't a clue how difficult it can be to avoid roads like these. AND, how weather conditions in one area can be completely different in an adjacent area, so people can be caught unprepared. I do remember my father installing snow tires every winter season, but wasn't sure if they would have helped in a situation like this one. I have a girlfriend who now lives in the area, whom I forwarded the link to, so she clued me in as well to how bad it was.

      Because the people who control the roads haven't caught up with the new mentality that the government is supposed to somehow keep you from doing idiotic stuff that you should know better than to do. If the roads are awful, don't go out. If you have to go out, drive with care.

      Who exactly is supposed to close the roads in Should Land? If a storm like this hits there could be hundreds of hills just like this, and certainly not enough police to handle closing them when they themselves can't go anywhere. Videos like this are one of the things I look forward to as winter approaches.

      I live up that hill and I can tell you the snow at that volume was a shock. It was raining just a mile away or less and the all of a sudden I drove to the snow line. It was a heavy wet snow so even a little bit made it a tough drive. I had my whole family in the van. We took side roads where we could but it was a slow climb up the mountain...where most of Bountiful lives. I am guessing a lot of people were just as surprised by the amount of snow in such a short time. Lots of cars did stop and people were trying to divert traffic at the top of the hill but its a long road with lots of side streets. For every car you saw in an accident there were many people that just pulled off the road. I saw several school and church parking lots with drivers waiting it out. The video doesn't tell the whole story buts a great reminder to be careful.

        Reminds me of similar conditions when I lived in Michigan. When a cold front rolls in and it's raining on one side of town but snowing on the other, it's not uncommon to get a black ice condition with a layer of snow on top. And it can come on surprisingly suddenly. If you're on the way home from work, school, shopping, etc you can easily get caught out in a really dangerous situation. As you said, plenty of people do pull over but others, quite obviously, are either a) oblivious to the dangers; b) just plain stupid, or c) actually believe they are such superior drivers that they'll show everyone else how to do it. While all three groups end up on YouTube for everyone to laugh at, it seems only those in c) get pissed off about the consequences of their actions.

      All the drivers of 4WD vehicles showed the same pattern: they applied their brakes., not realizing they lose the 4WD capacity the moment they do so. The trick is to drive slowly, downshift and not touch the brakes.

        What difference would it make? Short of skinny, studded ice tires, not much would have helped people on a 5-6% grade, trying to change direction to avoid each other. I know all us self-righteous car dorks love to imagine that our mad skills and snow tires make us unstoppable on ice, but in that situation even studless tires would have been only a marginal improvement.

      You wouldn't try an wear 'all season' clothes would you? No, you'd get heat stroke in august and freeze your butt off in January. Why do almost 100% of cars have 'all season' tires? In a climate like this you need a set of cheap narrow rims with snow tires for the winter then it's nice to switch to performance for the summer.

        And I don't get people who say they don't have the money for an extra set of tires. Your tires will last twice as long if you are only using them for half the year. And when you lose a leg in an accident, will that have been money well saved?

      My wife has a Subaru Tribeca on the all-season tires it came with. My Subaru WRX has winter/snow tires. Having driven both Subaru's a lot, the snow/winter tires make a huge difference over all-season tires. The A/S kinda suck in the snow/ice. For those who say they can't afford winter tires, how much does a fender bender cost, even with insurance.

      As a person who regularly (snowboarder) drives in the snow and ice (08 Legacy GT) with stud-less snow tires, I can tell you it starts with the tires. AWD, Stability Control, ABS, Traction Control ... all these do is help after you have some sort of traction. Nothing is more important then tires to your safety and those are you. Bottom line is, there is NO all weather tire then can even compare with a snow tire. There are rain/dry tires, and there are snow tires.

        Word up. I have an STI and live in Colorado Springs. The conditions up here just aren't as severe as the ski areas west of Denver. So I actually bought all-season tires to save money this winter. But I got the best possible all-season tires for snowy conditions, the Continental ExtremeContact DWS. They do pretty well in the snow. Still, I have no delusions about the car's capabilities on ice.

          I got the Continental ExtremeContact DWS last summer. My Mustang GT is actually drivable in the snow! I've never had such grip with "all-season" tires before.

        100% agreed. I'm a snowboarder as well (and from CO also) and I switched out the tires on my Jeep this past summer. The old tires were some cheapies the dealer threw on before I bought it so he could say it had new tires. They were all seasons, but sucked horribly and gave me no confidence at all in snowy and icy driving. Even rain caused me some concern. I literally was just waiting for them to wear out so I could buy new tires. I bought some BFG All-Terrains and it's like a completely different vehicle despite the tires being the only change. Also helped out my off-road capability as well naturally. Win-Win in my book as I use my Jeep for summer fun also. I also noted huge differences when I tried out different tires in my GTI as well. The stock all-seasons weren't that great in the snow, but the next set I bought (Pirelli PZero Nero M+S) were awesome. They were among the highest ranked tires in their category on tirerack.com when I got them. They were awesome in all but deep snow (which I don't take my GTI in anyhow). I've since moved on to dedicated summer tires for the GTI and a set of winter wheels and tires I bought for a good price. The winter tires are that much better than the all-seasons as well. Really makes a big difference. It's not just about buying winter tires, it's doing the research and getting good ones. A cheap set of winter tires may not be all that much better than a decent set of all-seasons.

      The article I read on Huffington Post last night said numerous residents were at the top of the hill telling drivers not to go down the hill, but were for whatever reason ignored!
