You can now satisfy your hankering for a 2012 Audi A6 by spending a little time on the recently unveiled configurator. The sedan we called "a smaller, livelier A8" starts at just $41,700 for the 211-horsepower, 2.0 TSFI in Premium trim with a CVT and front-wheel drive, but online ballers can jump right into the $56,780, 310-hp, 3.0 TSFI Prestige with the eight-speed automatic and quattro.

Hint: if you want to open up the full world of options then head straight for the big-money guy (as you can see in the image above, we did just that), but there's fun to be had throughout the range by clicking the link below.

I didn't even know that you could buy a FWD A6 with 211HP...to be honest those specs sound pretty unappealing on paper.

I've seen the new A6 here in Miami...Aside from the light show in the headlights, its a pretty anonymous looking car.

A6 offers much more than BMW or Mercedes hence the price. Want to have a better car you have to pay more, you can not afford A6 to buy a BMW. the new A6 is in all respects better than the scab BMW.

This looks to be a great car with the supercharged 3.0L, but I think Audi needs a much better drivetrain option for the base model. $42K is a pretty heady starting point for a FWD 4 banger and it gets up to $48K quickly with Navigation and the Sports Package. The last A4 I drove with this 2.0L turbo and CVT droned heavily -- it didn't sound or feel like an expensive car, but the same drivetrain is being used here in an even more expensive car. Sadly, Quattro, Audi's hallmark, isn't even offered with the base engine nor is a manual transmission, so it's FWD and CVT or the bigger engine -- no in between. I don't know what other powertrains Audi may have under development, but I'd expect better in this class of sedan.

What are you even TALKING about? The engine doesn't "drone" heavily. Are/were you drunk? The engine sounds just fine, wonderful even. It's clear to me after that ridiculous statement everything else you're writing is complete crap... Who cares if it's FWD based - it's built for quattro, and it's done right. Audi's cost the way they do because they are QUALITY cars. No corners cut, but unfortunately the idiots on the internet can't understand this. They just whine about the price - expect every german luxury car to be priced like a cheap asian lexus. Riiiight. The Audi is the FULL package.

Well, looks like the foolish japanese fanboys are out in full force today! pathetic...everyone knows the Audi costs more because it's the REAL DEAL. FWD or not FWD, this is a premium german sports sedan. Not an over blown accord or camry, not a Lexus GS (Grandma's Sedan), and certainly not a Hyundai "genesis" (puke). This is an Audi, and you best your ass you're going to pay for one. More power to Audi for getting maximum price for their cars - it makes them more exclusive and more pretigious than a cheap immitator wanna be from Asia.
