Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa – Click above for high-res image gallery

Milanese coachbuilder and design house Zagato is known for some unspeakably beautiful works of rolling art. The Perana Z-One and Fiat 500 Coupe are two recent examples that have caught our eye, but even Zagato managed to out-do itself with the stunning TZ3 Corsa.

Unveiled at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este nearly a year ago, the TZ3 stands as Zagato's continuation of a line that started in the 1960s with the TZ1 and TZ2 specials, which remain collectors' favorites to this day. The TZ3 was commissioned by a private customer and was set to be a one-off, but the latest reports from Europe suggest that Zagato is preparing to roll out a limited production run of street versions – which could have been what Zagato was hinting at with its holiday greetings.

Dropping the race-specific Corsa designation, the TZ3 Stradale would not be, as the concept car was, based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. Instead, its borrow its underpinnings would reportedly be borrowed from the Dodge Viper, no doubt facilitated by the fact that Alfa and Dodge are under common management these days. The Viper's 8.4-liter V10 engine would reportedly be part of the mix as well, tuned to deliver as much as 612 horsepower, making this one report we hope comes to fruition... and to our driveways.

UPDATE: Zagato has confirmed to Autoblog the development of the project, as the second step that started with the pictured TZ3 Corsa one-off.

Please tell me this beast is on a collision course with reality!

      Thanks. You did well.

This is why Chrysler and Fiat were destined to be together. Unfortunately, the Daimler marriage was fruitless.

Sub 2000lb weight and 8.4L V10 sounds like in exercise in insanity. I like it.

I think it's simply one of the best looking cars ever made. I'm absolutely in love with it.
Every angle is perfect, I even like the weird graphics.

Stunning! I can definitely see that car as a Viper. That would really shake up Dodge.

the first reliable Alfa Romeo since 20 years...or longer

I'm not feeling it. Nothing against the Viper but if I am looking for a TZ3 Stradale, I am looking for an Alfa Romeo. Zagato's history with the TZ line has always been to use an Alfa Romeo as the base. To switch to the Viper would be lose the car's history.

I like the idea of Viper that has been reworked by Zagato, but it needs to be its own creation and it needs to be allowed to stand in its own light.

        Exactly Alex
TZ stands for Tubolare Zagato. TZ and TZ2 were ~1500 lbs. and ran a 1570cc 4cyl engine.

The TZ3 has no tube frame, and there will be no Alfa tie in whatsoever if it's not powered by Alfa. An 8.4L V10, an engine only Americans.....nevermind, will not serve to continue the lineage of the design. In fact, history will paint this motor it as a dinosaur engine delivered years past the obvious swing back to small sophisticated motors over brutish power from HUGE pistons.

The TZ3 is pretty though. TZ2 has always been one of my favorite designs.

I met a guy running a TZ2 at the Monterey historics years ago. The paddock was already rife with massive motorcoaches and teams of paid mechanics to care for the exotic machines present. But in the grassroots section of the paddock this guy towed his TZ2 behind his pickup (which he was sleeping out of) on an open trailer. When I asked how a down-to-earth guy like him was racing such a rare and valuable car, he said, "I got lucky and bought this a long time ago, before big money got interested in vintage racing" Even the owners/drivers of these cars could be giant killers!

That's a sexy beast, but i'd rather see them use the previous gen viper underpinnings to build a previous gen viper :-)
