It may have taken 28 years to get here, but the Ford Ranger is living inanimate proof that determination eventually pays off. Or something like that. Automotive News reports (via PickupTrucks.com) that Ford built its 7 millionth Ranger last month at the assembly plant in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Ranger has gone through a number of revisions, trim levels and price increases (thanks a lot, inflation!) on its way from being a $6,289 single-cab, 73-horsepower work truck to today's $17,820 143-hp pickup. As an interesting side point, the original Ranger weighed in at 2,532 pounds and could tow 3,300 pounds. Today, the 3,030-pound Ranger can tug a total of 5,860 pounds. Progress!

All good things must come to an end, though, as Ford has announced that it will cease production of the North American Ranger in 2011. The jury's still out on the current truck's replacement, though rumors swirl that a smaller version of the next F-150 called, imaginatively enough, the F-100 may be in the offing. What are the chances that truck will have a 30-year lifespan and 7,000,000-plus sales?

      Agreed on the F-100. whatever happenned to those? Or even the older F-150 with a straight six. Great trucks. I just don't trust the push button 4WD vacuum activators the hey-day Rangers and explorers had either, they don't last long before they need work in my experience.

      There should be a dually Ranger made, that would be awesome.

      I have never owned a Ranger, but drove one at work and a couple of people I knew had owned them. They always felt extra cheaply built. Toyota maybe a mess these days, but the small Toyota trucks from the 1990s is still a great little work truck. I have yet to say that about any Ranger. With that said, Ford is clearly improving by leaps and bounds. As someone who has owned many Fords and finally gave up in late 1990s because it was getting to painful to keep buying them, I am impressed with the direction Ford has taken. Whatever the replacement for the Ranger is going to be, it will likely be a huge leap forward. I am very close to considering buying a Ford again. Something I did not think would ever happen, well, if they do another run of Ford GTs I would go for that if my wallet can handle it. The sooner Ford buries this generation of Ranger, the better.

        I find it odd that you found Rangers to feel cheaply built, but praise the 90s Tacoma when they too felt cheap with the worst of the worst interiors, but like the Ranger, were great little work trucks. I personally felt the Ranger always felt like the nicer 90s model mini-trucks, but was also just as dependable (the 4 cyl).

      I used my Ranger's (4, bought new in '97) to handle my companies' deliveries and they were ideal - not too large or small, and perfectly capable of quick turns in alleyways. That said, I've since moved my fleet to Toyota; I want the newest and best technology - not to re-buy a 25 year-old design.

      Fuel economy doesn't keep me from buying an F-150 - it simply isn't small enough to be useful.

      Hint to Ford:

      Replace the Ranger with a new SMALL truck or lose my business until you do.

      "It's no secret we have a new Ranger coming globally. We're working on one for all the other markets in the world," Kuzak said. "The difference is that all of those other markets only have a Ranger. They don't have an F-150 above it."

      The new global Ranger, code-named T6, is being designed in Australia. The current U.S.-built and overseas Ford Ranger models share only their names.

        Expect the new "Ranger" (not F100) to be on a global Ranger midsize platform because thats what all the other markets require, since they dont have full size F150's. The "Ranger" name will live on if CEO Alan Mulally has anything to say about brand equity (ref. Taurus).

        Would be nice to see the 2.0 I4 EcoBoost making over 250hp and 250ft-lbs torque (at 1500 rpm) with a 6-speed in the new Ranger good for over 30mpg.... sweet!

        i don't know about you, but if i had 250hp and a 6 spd in a small pickup, i would be having way too much fun to see 30mpg. still, would be great to know its there!

      Please build the F-100 Ford!

      I need a truck that has capacity in terms of volume, but will never need to tow 10,000 plus pounds or haul 2 tons. A V-6 will be fine.

        Umm, really?
        I don't know much about the original Ranger, but, at least according to PickupTrucks.com, the 3,030 lb Ranger is a 4x2 reg cab (w/ prob. 4 cyl. engine), the Ranger that can tow 5,860 lb is a 4x2 extended cab (prob. needs a V6).
        And therefore, a 3,030 lb Ranger towing 5,860 lb will void its warranty, plain and simple. Furthermore, there's much debate about the accuracy of manufacturer's claim of max. payload and max. towing capacity.

        According to Automobile magazine:
        " With the introduction of every new large truck, the proud manufacturer would announce some new high in the number of pounds that could be hauled or towed. That would prompt one or more competitors to pause for a few months before announcing revised tow ratings for their products which would of course return their progeny to the top of the towing heap.

        But after years of effort, the SAE's tow vehicle trailer rating committee is finally ending the farce....
        a standard was approved in April 2008 and scheduled for 2013 model year implementation."

        Yes I have considered it, but nothing beats the open bed of a truck for hauling lumber, mulch, gardening supplies, etc. You can't drop a one-scoop yard of mulch into a van and the van cannot be hosed out either.

        What's the need for a V6? A 4-cylinder is fine for occasional hauling of mulch. Hell, a 2,500lb 73hp pickup would do the trick.

      Keep the Ranger name.

      And keep the truck smaller than a mid-size.

      This will help Ford's CAFE rating and keep customers that have no interest in a full-size truck.

      I still think the best thing for them to do is take the Ford Transit van platform and make a pickup out of it - that would reduce costs and keep it on the smaller scale.

      The current F150 is just ginormous - it is sooo much bigger than what a full-size truck used to be that it's just ridiculous. There are many people that would never even consider getting a vehicle that huge, but at the same time would like something with an open bed. The current Ranger is a decent size for folks like that, they just don't like the fact that it's so antiquated.

      PLEASE DON'T KILL THE RANGER. I've own three different rangers and would make it four if they would update or import the Ranger from other countries. I hate the Chevy Colorado its to small and the Nissan Frontier just looks cheap. Guaranteed if Ford released a Ranger with the Eco boost motor and a diesel version myself along with alot of people would buy it. Also with Ford dropping the Sport Trac they need a new four door crew cab mid size truck under 40 grand. Come on Ford lets do it.

      I hope Ford comes up with an appropriate replacement for the Ranger. Right after a Tacoma (recalls be damned), these two trucks are the only trucks I'd care for. V8s are nice for work trucks and ranch/boat/camper owners, but 99% of the time the biggest thing I see them used for is hauling a motorcycle in the bed. Between some 5 foot raised F250 Super Duty & a 4 cyl. Ranger, I'd take the Ranger any day.

      Ford needs to keep it's replacement in the compact category. I fear an F-100 will just be a 4 inch shorter F-150 for nearly the same money.

        Agreed...and this is where Mahindra comes in, with their truly compact truck. Or perhaps a re-done Frontier or Scion entry.

        @Luis - I believe the Mahindra is a mid-size. But, it is pointless to talk about anyways since it's been vaporware in the States for the better part of what... 3 years?

        Scion truck? No thanks. It will probably come with ground effects and be front wheel drive, on top of lowered suspension.

        As for a "re-done Frontier"... Why would you assume it will be smaller? I would guess they're more likely to kill the Titan and keep the Frontier mid-size.

        Thank you! Best comment of the day. Why does everyone feel they need a bigger truck? The Ranger is the perfect truck, period. Simple interior. Rugged "get the job done" exterior. I too fear they will make the next one bigger. I hear people all the time say "Well i was looking at the ranger but for a couple of thousand more I popped for a full size." I'm like WTF? My thought process is like this, just because i can get MORE for my money doesn't really mean i WANT OR NEED more. I want or need the Ranger size pickup. So just because they offer it doesn't mean i should take it. As long as the next Ranger doesn't have built-in navigation or tons of electronic touchscreens i'll be happy. The Ranger truly is the last of the real trucks. Price it at $10,000 and i'll take it, cash!

        Well I think the days of waiting are almost over Chibi. I recently read that the company has joined the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers. I’m thinking that’s a sign that Mahindra is on the right track to introducing their pickups. Plus, I’m sure the company knows what it’s doing in terms of its overall strategy– I read that their UV sales volumes in India are higher than those of Honda, Toyota, GM and Ford.

        With the Ranger being phased out, I really think Mahindra’s two pickups are ideally placed to fill what will soon be a hole in the mid-to-compact size pickup market. And let’s not forget their award-winning clean diesel engine. And of course that amazing payload capacity!

      Ford is very stupid to kill the Ranger in the US market, very stupid. I've felt that Ford has made a lot of very good decisions in the past couple of years, but this is not one of them. Don't be surprised if the Tacoma and Frontier sell a few extra units in 2012.
